VGCC art classes provide mural for Granville Senior Center

Submitted Article November 6, 2012 Art, Education

Students in two Personal Enrichment Art classes at Vance-Granville Community College recently completed work on a mural that will decorate the Granville County Senior Center. Twelve students in a day class and nine others in a night class, both taught by longtime instructor Lelia Brigham, have each contributed to the four-by-six-foot quilt-like mural. “It’s one of the most original ‘quilts’ I’ve ever seen,” Brigham said. “Each artist chose his or her own subject, design and style, so it’s very colorful …

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers: Pressing for answers on Benghazi

Submitted Article November 6, 2012 NC Elected Officials

Phil Hart: My Political Inbox

Submitted Article November 6, 2012 Opinion

I’ve tried to stay far away from political commentary on here myself, so on this last election day, I thought I’d share my bombardment of flyers in my regular snail mail mailbox.  These are nicely printed flyers, full color, heavy stock paper.  I’ve tried to keep all I’ve received, but I may have let some slip in the trash, the numbers below are from my collection this season.  For the record, I’m registered as independent. 9 from Doug Berger1 pro …

With the 2012 presidential election here, officials in both parties are looking over results of the congressional elections two years ago for any guidance for today’s balloting. One notable finding is that 7 percent of Hispanics voted — the highest percentage since the Census Bureau started collecting this information in 1974. Maine and Washington had voter turnouts greater than 55 percent, while fewer than 40 percent of eligible Texans went to the polls. The most common reason given for not …

This year’s Nobel prizes were announced last month, and the award ceremonies will be held in Stockholm, Sweden and Oslo, Norway next month. In 1952, the prize for medicine was awarded for the discovery of the first antibiotic produced in the U.S. — streptomycin. The breakthrough medicine was developed by a Ukrainian immigrant, Dr. Selman Waksman, and four of his students at Rutgers University in New Jersey in 1944. It went into production later that year and proved to be …
