New Bill Will Slash Small Business Programs

Senate Republicans have introduced a bill that could eliminate all federal programs to assist small businesses, as well as women-owned, veteran-owned and minority-owned firms. Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) introduced S. 1116, titled the “Department of Commerce and the Workforce Consolidation Act,” which would combine the Small Business Administration (SBA) with the Department of Labor and the Department of Commerce, a move that could devastate U.S. job creation. An 89-year-old Raleigh man accused of voter fraud said he was trying to prove a point by casting two ballots.   Leland Duane Lewis voted in early voting on only the front of the ballot, then returned during regular voting and voted only the back of the ballot.  Lewis said he told volunteers at the polling place what happened on Election Day, but he wasn’t charged with a crime until Wednesday.  Lewis was released from the Wake County jail on Wednesday …

Vance County Tourism Spending Increased in 2010

According to a report released Tuesday entitled “The Economic Impact Of Travel On North Carolina Counties, Vance County was one out of 98 other North Carolina counties that increased visitor spending from 2009 to 2010.  The two falling counties were Northampton and Columbus.  The report specifically cited the following details:  Domestic tourism in Vance County generated an economic impact of $38.74 million in 2010. On August 11, 2011 members of the Henderson Police Department Major Crimes Unit arrested and charged Tyrelle Octavious Benson, 17, of 7969 NC 39 North, Henderson, NC with robbery with a dangerous weapon and felony probation violation. Mr. Benson was given a $60,000 secured bond pending a court hearing on August 29, 2011. On August 5, 2011 around 12:04 AM officers with the Henderson Police Department responded to the park on David Street, Henderson in reference to a drug complaint. Upon arrival, the officer’s investigation lead them to the residence of 921 David Street, Henderson. Governor’s Restructuring Plan Streamlines Three Agencies into One Dept. of Public Safety

As part of her belt-tightening efforts to streamline state government, Gov. Bev Perdue announced this week that Secretary Reuben Young will serve as secretary of the new, restructured Department of Public Safety. Free Performances in Works for Vance County Students

Despite budgetary issues, the Vance County school system is still trying to provide opportunities for its students. In a partnership with the Henderson Community Concert Series, they are planning to offer free performances by the North Carolina Symphony on October 4th, 2011 and by a flamenco group in March of 2012.
