White House: Here’s what the refugee screening process looks like

Submitted Article November 25, 2015 White House

Since the attacks in Paris, many have asked about our process for admitting Syrian refugees into this country. I understand the anxiety that many Americans are feeling right now. And as Secretary of Homeland Security, I share with President Obama the top priority of keeping the American people safe. So let me be clear about what this process of vetting and resettling refugees looks like. It’s important to remember, we’re focused on admitting the most vulnerable Syrians — this means …

It’s a time to celebrate one of life’s simple, viscous pleasures — it’s Peanut Butter Lovers Month. The stuff of one of America’s favorite sandwiches, peanut butter was first offered to the public at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904. But as we currently know it — with the peanuts roasted and the product churned like butter to be smooth and so the oil won’t separate — peanut butter didn’t appear on grocery shelves until 1922. While we each eat …

Submitted Article November 24, 2015 Agriculture

Because Thanksgiving falls late this year, many Christmas tree growers are opening up early for the season. The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services encourages consumers to use proper techniques to care for their fresh trees. “Real Christmas trees offer a great addition to your holiday decorations, but they do need a little extra attention,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “With proper care, a real tree can last up to two months, providing your home with a wonderful aroma …

This month marks the 151st anniversary of absentee ballot voting in the U.S. This measure was introduced during the Civil War to permit Union army soldiers in the field to choose between re-electing Abraham Lincoln or sending his opponent, George McClellan, to the White House. But on this date in 1896, Vermont became the first state to enshrine in law the concept of voting away from home, though the voter had to be within the state. All that was required …

Senator Richard Burr: VOTE refugees and national security

Submitted Article November 23, 2015 NC Elected Officials

The horrific terrorist attacks in Paris last Friday were a sobering reminder of the threats we face from those who wish to do America and her allies harm. That’s why it is reasonable and prudent to suspend the President’s plan to resettle Syrians in the United States until the American people are satisfied that this program is not being used by ISIS to gain access into the country. Our nation similarly suspended the refugee admission program after the September 11 attacks. …

It used to be that going to the bank was somewhat of a chore — with inconvenient hours and locations, and waiting in line for a teller. Now, many of us rarely see the inside of a bank anymore. We take care of our financial business at an ATM, by going online, or at our bank’s drive-in windows. The first such drive-up facility opened on this date in 1946 at the Exchange National Bank in Chicago, which offered its motoring customers …

Richard Brand: More War on Christmas?

Just red cups with no seasonal decorations. No snow flakes, no holly wreaths, no snowmen, no menorah, nothing but their …
