The crew from Jeri’s Kerr Lake Restaurant moves
full speed ahead toward spring during Saturday’s
St. Patrick’s Day parade on Garnett Street.
It wasn’t a day that shouted out “spring,” with thick gray clouds casting a pall over Garnett Street, but downtown Henderson’s Saturday celebration of St. Patrick’s Day was a lot closer to a green day than the holiday itself.
Two days earlier, Vance County was shrouded in 2 inches of snow, one of the latest significant snowfalls this area has seen. Mother Nature made sure all traces of snow and ice were gone before the Downtown Development Commission’s festivities kicked off at noon Saturday, but if she hadn’t handled the job, the chili from the Amran Riders Unit would have done the trick.
“I had two bites, and that’s all I could take,” said Fire Chief Danny Wilkerson, who served as one of the judges for the annual fund-raising chili cook-off on Breckenridge Street just off Garnett.
The Shriners were the clear winner for hottest chili, and Wilkerson said The Peanut Roaster’s chili clearly deserved the trophy for best taste.
The final trophy of the cook-off, for best presentation, went to Gray’s Gourmet for a table awash in green just outside the back door of the Wildflower Cafe. It was a special time and place for Gray’s Gourmet owner Patricia Newhouse, who has bought the Wildflower and plans to reopen the popular restaurant April 4 (visit HomeinHenderson.com on Monday for more on the rebirth of the Wildflower).
Nancy Smith of Lighthouse Entertainment
prepares to pain another pretty face.
Several hundred people donned green and headed downtown for the chili; Lighthouse Entertainment’s inflatable slide, balloon animals and face painting for kids; music from DJ Alan Norwood, proprietor of the Java House; and, finally, a parade featuring everyone from the Amran Riders in their miniature race cars to the Little Miss Kerr Lake titleholders to the Crash Test Dummies carrying the banner of the Safe Kids Coalition.

“I think it’s one of the best turnouts we’ve ever had,” said A.B. Cobb of the Amran Riders Unit, which helped run the chili cook-off and will split the proceeds with Heart’s Haven, the domestic violence program of ACTS.

Cobb said the total raised from sales of chili, soft drinks and hats won’t be known until Wednesday, but as he bagged trash during the pre-parade cleanup on Breckenridge Street, he knew he had a lot of people to thank Saturday: “Heart’s Haven and the Amran Riders would like to express our most sincere appreciation to the people of Vance County and Henderson for showing their support and for making this a real community event.”
