The HomeinHenderson.com staff took a road trip to Chapel Hill on Sunday to see one of Vance County’s favorite sons, Matt Ellington, play ball for the University of North Carolina.
We’re happy to report that Ellington has put his back problems behind him and is torturing ACC pitchers with the same sweet swing he used to dominate the Northern Carolina Conference for Northern Vance High.
Playing for a Tar Heel team ranked in the Top 10, Ellington is starting and batting third. He’s hitting .336, is third on the team with seven home runs and ranks first with 37 RBI in the 34 games he has played.

While the Tar Heels had no luck against the Hurricanes this weekend, losing 17-7 Friday and 18-9 Saturday and blowing a ninth-inning lead on the way to a 7-7 curfew-driven tie Sunday, Ellington was dominant. He had two clutch singles and a home run both Saturday and Sunday. The solo homer Sunday was a towering monster, clearing the 345-foot mark in right field by at least 100 feet.
As a redshirt sophomore, Ellington is part of a promising young Tar Heel team. The ball club’s appeal — 2,215 fans attended Sunday’s game — is outstripping the amenities of Boshamer Stadium It’s a beautiful place to watch a game, nestled amid dorms a stone’s throw from Kenan Stadium. But there’s only one place to buy a hot dog, producing innings-long lines for food, and the other concession stand offered only Sprite and water to drink. UNC’s Rams Club has launched an $8 million campaign to upgrade the stadium.
We’ll see whether Ellington’s around to play in the new, improved Boshamer. He’s draft-eligible after this season, and pro scouts can’t help noticing that flawless left-handed swing.
