Pick of the day: Weed and Seed progress

Henderson is a long way from receiving federal designation as a Weed and Seed city, but a crucial step toward that goal should happen at this morning’s meeting of the Vance Organization to Implement Community Excellence, which will be asked to endorse the borders of the area worked out by a VOICE committee (with tweaking still possible). The Juvenile Crime Prevention Council has given its backing to the area, and VOICE will ask the Vance County Coalition Against Violence to provide its support before the area goes to the Henderson City Council and the Vance County Board of Commissioners. A letter of intent is due to the U.S. Attorney’s Office by the end of August, and the full application is due in October. VOICE meets at 10:30 at the Aycock Recreation Complex.
