HPD to begin 2nd VIPS class

by Lt. Irvin Robinson
Henderson Police Department

The Henderson Police Department is accepting applications from people interested in becoming part of the department’s Volunteer Service Program.

The program, known as Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS), will allow citizens who successfully complete the department’s Volunteer Training Course to work as support personnel within the police department’s operational structure.

Citizens interested in the program must complete an application. All applicants will be screened due to the legal and security requirements of working regularly with police department personnel as well as in and around secured areas of the police department. Applications need to be turned in by July 31, 2009.

Successful applicants will be invited to participate in a specialized training class that will orient them to the police department’s day-to-day operations and the tasks that volunteers will be assigned to work once trained. Volunteer classes will be held on August 19, 20, 25, 26, and 27, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Some of the assignments that VIPS volunteers will be given include conducting citizen observer patrols in neighborhoods and assisting officers with traffic at special events.

Applications and additional information for the VIPS Program may be obtained from the Henderson Police Department by contacting Lt. Irvin W. Robinson at 252.431.6061. All applications need to be turned in to the Henderson Police Department for approval.
