Council says no and perhaps on property deals

The Henderson City Council declined a $2,000 offer for a vacant lot off of Edwards Street during Monday’s work session meeting.

Assistant City Manager Frank Frazier said of the decision only that the Land Planning & Development Committee had decided not to continue the proposed deal “at this time”.

In a separate matter, the council decided to pursue a proposed land swap deal in which a half-acre of land on the Blacknall Cemetery side of Beckford Drive would be exchanged for a parcel adjacent to Elmwood Cemetery.

Elmwood Cemetery is located at the end of Breckenridge Street.

The Beckford Drive piece of land was retained by the city after the sale of the former City Hall building to the Franklin-Vance-Warren Partnership for Children in 2008.

Frazier told members that he felt the exchange is “a good deal” and recommended it because there are areas of the cemetery that encroach on the city’s current property. He also said that the exchange would offer the possibility of expanding Elmwood in the future.

The council appeared to view the idea favorably.

Alston told members that he would have to abstain from any future vote because he has “some kind of interest in that property”. He did not mention what that interest might be.
