According to the above notice received yesterday by Home in Henderson, the town of Kittrell plays to exercise its extraterritorial jurisdiction within a one mile radius around the town limits.
A hearing on the proposed Kittrell ETJ will be held on Monday, July 19, 2010 at 7:00 at the Kittrell Community House in Kittrell, North Carolina.
The city of Henderson currently maintains a one-mile radius ETJ around its city limits. Should Kittrell’s town council choose to adopt an ETJ, it would be the second municipality in Vance County to do so.
The extension of an ETJ allows the enacting municipality to extend its zoning regulations and the enforcement of those regulaions outside of its borders. Traditionally, extending an ETJ around municipal limits is preparatory to annexation; however, Henderson has done very little addition to its corporate limits since its ETJ was enacted in 1974. The last annexation was in May of 2002.
