N.C. Mountain State Fair celebrates 20 years of ‘Mountain Fun for Everyone’ Sept. 6-15

FLETCHER — Whatever your interests are, you’ll find something fun at the 2013 N.C. Mountain State Fair. Organizers promise “Mountain Fun for Everyone” during the fair’s 20th run, which will take place Sept. 6-15 at the Western N.C. Agricultural Center.

The fair may be 100 days away, but organizers are encouraging visitors to start planning now, especially if they are entering one of hundreds of premium competitions. The entry department has already received dozens of entries for this year’s fair.

“Summer is a great time for individuals and families to look through the award catalog and pick a few competitions to enter at the fair,” said Matt Buchanan, fair manager. “From beef cattle and llamas to canning and crafts, we’ve got a contest for everyone no matter what your interests and talents are.”

Nearly $240,000 in premium money will be awarded this year. Contests are held across three divisions: general exhibits and cooking contests; livestock shows; and music, dance and song. The 2013 Entry and Award Catalog is available online at www.mountainfair.org or at local Cooperative Extension offices. Entry deadlines start as early as Aug. 2.

Admission tickets for the fair are $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-12 and seniors 65 and older, and free for children 5 and under. Fairgoers can save $2 off gate admission and 50 percent off ride tickets by purchasing in advance. Advance tickets will go on sale Aug. 1 at area Ingles stores, the Western N.C. Agricultural Center and the Western N.C. Farmers Market.
