Congresswoman Renee Ellmers: Individuals and Families Need Relief from Obamacare, too

The recent announcement by the Obama administration that they were delaying the implementation of the employer mandate found in Obamacare until 2015 is a reluctant admission that the law is fundamentally flawed.  It’s also an admission that the law poses a danger to American jobs.  However, the delay that the administration has proposed only provides relief for large businesses, and does nothing for everyday Americans living under the soon to be imposed individual mandate.

Obamacare is not just a threat to businesses and their ability to create jobs, it poses real threats to hard working families across the country. Because of this, the House will vote next week on H.R. 2667 the Authority for Mandate Delay Act and H.R. 2668 the Fairness for American Families Act, bills which delay both the employer mandate and the individual mandate found in Obamacare.  These are important pieces of legislation that provide all Americans relief from the harsh effects of Obamacare.

In addition to the work I am doing to protect American businesses and families from Obamacare, I am hard at work on a number of other issues both in Washington and here in the district.

This week in the Republican Women’s Policy Committee, I joined a number of my colleagues in holding a very important meeting with members of our armed forces on the serious crisis concerning sexual assaults and how they are being handled. I was impressed by the candor and frankness of those in attendance and see this meeting as an important first step. In the weeks ahead we will hold more discussions and seek to find viable solutions. I was also honored by the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) this week, receiving the “Superhero Award”, an award given for my work on behalf of people with disabilities. NDSS is the largest nonprofit dedicated to advocating for people with Down syndrome and their families at the federal, state and local levels of government.

In the district this week, I was given the opportunity to speak at the open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Harnett Health Medical Park in Dunn. Later this month, I will be hosting my second annual Recruit-A-Vet Employment Fair in the second district. See below for time, location, and registration information.

Support for H.R. 1416 Grows

H.R. 1416, my bill to protect cancer patients from sequester cuts, continues to gain support — currently with 97 cosponsors. Click here to find out if your representative is one of them. The Association of Community Cancer Centers recently published an update on the status of the bill which you can read here.

Helping Veterans through the Recruit-A-Vet Employment Fair

For the sacrifices members of our military have made to ensure our freedoms, we need to do everything possible to make sure they have the best career opportunities available when they return to civilian life. The “Recruit-A-Vet” employment fair is one way my office is helping to make that transition easier.

Last year, more than half of the veterans that attended my Recruit-A-Vet Employment Fair found jobs through the event.

This year, the job fair will be held on Monday, July 29th from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at The Crown Center, 1960 Coliseum Drive, Fayetteville, NC.
