Vance County NC Cooperative Extension Updates

PONDS MAY BE UNDER STRESS

Due to the heavy rainfall and saturated soils, landowners may want to inspect ponds. Be sure to check drains and emergency spillways to be certain they are operating properly.
DON’T MOVE FIREWOOD
With the recent discovery of Emerald Ash Borer in Vance, Granville and Person Counties, everyone is reminded that it’s best to obtain firewood from a local source. Those who enjoy summer camping trips should procure firewood at their destination, and leave any leftovers on site.

HAVE YOU SEEN KUDZU BUGS IN WARREN COUNTY?

I’m certain we have kudzu bugs here, but our Extension Entomology Specialist would like to confirm it with a specimen or photo. If you have a field with kudzu bugs, please let me know and I will come out to collect the sample. For more information on this new pest, here is a link to an article from Southeast Farm Press:

FROGEYE LEAFSPOT ON SOYBEAN (from Dr. Jim Dunphy, NCSU)
Frogeye leafspot has been confirmed in the state already, and the wet weather we’ve been experiencing is conducive to its development.  It has been long enough since we’ve had a serious outbreak of this disease that we have quite a few good varieties that are susceptible to the disease (42 of the 90 varieties in the “Top Ten” list in the January 2013 version of North Carolina Soybean Variety Information (CS-SB-25).  The same publication has a list of varieties with resistance to the disease.  The disease can limit photosynthate production and yields enough that we recommend scouting for the disease now, even though it usually does not show up this early.
DON’T GIVE UP ON SPROUTED WHEAT
Dr. Weisz, NCSU Small Grains Specialist, reports that many elevators and buyers are accepting sprouted wheat. Call your prospective buyers to find out their requirements.
DO YOU STORE MORE THAN 1,320 GALLONS OF FUEL?
