Though less welcome, they are also rewarded with medical care. Pets commonly make several visits a year to the veterinarian for annual shots and a checkup. Of course, they also go to the vet if they get sick or hurt. The first state sponsored veterinary school in the U.S. opened on …

N.C. leads as craft beer craze hits the South
For a century, North Carolina and other Southern states had Prohibition-era laws on the books that kept alcohol-by-volume (ABV) levels so low that many craft breweries were prevented from setting up shop. “ABV limits are not a barrier to entry into the market, but it’s clearly a barrier to innovation,” said Bart Watson, an economist at the Brewers Association. “The different regulatory environments in the Southeast tend to [be stacked] against small brewers. But these states are coming to recognize …

We take for granted the many entertainment options so readily at hand because of the World Wide Web. Yet it sometimes brings you up short when you realize how new is this experience. One of the most versatile and gifted people in American history announced the invention of bifocal eyeglasses this month in 1785. Benjamin Franklin had been using one pair of glasses to read with and another for distant vision.
