Gas prices are a frequent cause for consumer complaint — but at least purchases aren’t restricted, as they were beginning this month in 1942. That’s when 17 states began rationing gasoline to help the war effort. By December, rationing was nationwide and remained in effect until the end of World War II, along with a national speed limit of 35 miles an hour. Now, there are more than 118,000 gas stations across the country. Each year, they sell nearly $452 …
Greg’s Garden (May 19th, 2014)
Harvesting our “first fruits” We have been quite busy harvesting the first vegetables from our plot garden. Spinach, Swiss Chard, Bok Choi, and Lettuce have all been to the table in these past two weeks, along with just a few fresh strawberries. Greg and I love to eat from the garden. Savings on our food dollars makes it worthwhile to keep gardening each spring thru fall. With the cost of fresh spinach topping out at $2.00 a package it only …
Legislative Update from Senator Richard Burr
Yesterday, the Veterans’ Affairs committee held a hearing on “The State of VA Health Care.” During the hearing we heard from Secretary Shinseki, Under Secretary Petzel, various veterans groups, and oversight entities, like the Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Accountability Office (GAO). To watch the full hearing, click here. I believe the hearing confirmed how systemic this problem is. Veterans and their families across the country have faced delayed, or in some cases, no access to health …

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers: Mother’s Day in Afghanistan
It was an honor to be part of a bipartisan delegation of female members of Congress on a trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan this past week. The trip allowed for me to see firsthand how things have evolved since my first visit to the country in 2012. While in Afghanistan, we hosted female service members to a Mother’s Day luncheon, where they discussed the challenges they face while deployed overseas. We were able to pass out Mother’s Day cards to …

Michael Bobbitt: Notes From the Peanut Gallery (City Council May 12th, 2014)

Speculation has been rampant as to the reason. Most observers thought the reason for tabling the sale revolved around hazardous materials such as lead based paint and asbestos insulation within the old building. Tonight the mystery was revealed as nothing more than unpaid back taxes. According to …
