One of the things we’ve learned the past six months is that not only don’t we know everything about Henderson and Vance County, but often we don’t even know there’s anything we ought to know. It’s hard for us to write about things we don’t know are happening, and it’s impossible for us to know everything that’s of interest to y’all out there on your computers. So, as part of the improvements we hope to make as the editor transitions …

Boys & Girls Club just needs place, money, hard work
When Charles Dickens wrote, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” he could have been talking about Henderson. Although crime seems to be an unabating issue and unemployment is still a monster, there are certainly positive movements in our community, and one is the Steering Committee for the Boys & Girls Club of North Central North Carolina.
Opinion: It’s time to do the water deal
When it comes to Henderson’s water contract with the Army Corps of Engineers, we have to agree with City Council member John Wester: We don’t get it.

Milestones: First day for students
Tuesday, July 1, 2025, 12:01 a.m. (Students are sleeping in a large classroom/dormitory. Each bed is clearly a reclining desk chair placed behind a student desk. There is the sound of the occasional muffled scream from outside the room. A Robotic Teacher simulates snoring behind a larger dormitory desk.)
To our readers: So long but not farewell
A little more than a month ago, I celebrated the success of HomeinHenderson with a note to you readers. What excited me wasn’t a rash of donations (we’ve had few) or an influx of ads (we still haven’t set the site up to run them, let alone tried to sell them), but the fact that the number of comments posted on the Web site had raced past the number of articles.
Pick of the day II: Back on the block
If you’re reading this today, you probably didn’t go to Greenville for the Voting Rights Act commemoration. Two motivational speakers will appear, one for the girls and one for the boys.
Interesting precedent for Economic Partnership
As the Henderson-Vance Economic Partnership approaches reality, Georgia’s attorney general has filed a pair of lawsuits worth keeping an eye on. Thurbert Baker wants two private groups involved in economic development, the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and Central Atlanta Progress, to make public documents related to their bids for a Super Bowl and the NASCAR Hall of Fame because those offers involve the commitment of public money. Sound familiar? Granted, actions in Georgia courts have no legal weight in …

Pick of the Day: Voting rights
This event is a bit far afield. But it’s being hosted by one of our congressmen, and it’s important. Rep. G. K. Butterfield and the Congressional Black Caucus Political Education and Leadership Institute are commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act with two workshops that are free and open to the public. “The Voting Rights Evolution in North Carolina After Reconstruction: It’s Successes, Failures and Challenges” will first focus on the barriers to black political participation, the limited …
