Strong Revenue Growth Triggers Lower Business Tax Rate
Governor Pat McCrory announced Tuesday that North Carolina ended the fiscal year with strong revenue growth, meaning business tax rates will be lower in 2017. Tax revenue collections were $21.3 billion, more than $300 million above the threshold for triggering a reduction in the state’s business tax rate from 4 percent to 3 percent beginning January 1, 2017. Governor Pat McCrory announced June 23 that the North Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) approved 31 grant and loan requests totaling $10,433,899. McCrory Administration Implements Federal Program to Recoup Taxes Owed by Employers
N.C. Commerce’s Division of Employment Security (DES) has begun to collect unpaid unemployment insurance taxes from employers through a federal program called the Treasury Offset Program (TOP). The Division implemented TOP originally for the recovery of unemployment insurance benefit overpayments to claimants in 2013. In January 2016, DES leveraged this process to implement the recovery of unpaid employer taxes.
