Vance-Granville Community College recently nominated Emory Gant-Hawkins of Henderson, a student in the college’s Culinary Arts program, for the North Carolina Community College System’s Dallas Herring Achievement Award. Vance County Schools is now conducting its annual “Give Five – Read Five” book donation campaign. VGCC nominates Radiography student for statewide leadership award
Vance-Granville Community College recently selected Nicholas L. Kemp of Wake Forest, a student in the Radiography program, as its nominee for the North Carolina Community College System’s Governor Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award. The award was established in 2004 in honor of Scott, who served as Governor of North Carolina from 1969-1973, and as President of the N.C. Community College System from 1983-1995. Each year, the N.C. SVHS Art Students in Vans Shoe Competition
Southern Vance High School art students have entered the Vans Custom Culture Shoe Competition and have been chosen as one of only 50 school groups across the United States to compete in regional competition for top honors! The students, all enrolled in Intermediate Visual Art classes with Amy Simpson, hand painted four pairs of canvas shoes, sold by Vans Shoes, to depict scenes/art in four categories: music, action sports, art related and local flavor. Award named in honor of VGCC Vice President Graham
A new award has been named in honor of Vance-Granville Community College Vice President of Finance and Operations Steven Graham by the Carolinas Association of Governmental Purchasing. The association has established an award for outstanding candidates seeking to become Certified Local Government Purchasing Officers, and has named it the “Steven C. Graham Achievement Award” in recognition of Graham’s commitment to developing current and future government purchasing professionals. VGCC to offer Private Pilot Ground School
Vance-Granville Community College will soon offer a course that prepares area residents to take flight with a private pilot’s license. The Private Pilot Ground School is scheduled to be held on VGCC’s South Campus, located between Creedmoor and Butner, on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m., May 18 through July 27. In this course, students gain the knowledge they will need to take the FAA private pilot written exam, under FAA-certified flight instructors from Blue Line Aviation. Students who …
VGCC Students inducted into Honor Society
Vance-Granville Community College recognized 55 students who were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students of two-year colleges, on April 19 in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus. VGCC students honored with induction into Phi Theta Kappa must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 (3.75 for part-time students) in associate degree curriculum programs and have completed at least 12 credit hours toward their degrees. Vance-Granville Community College awarded 305 scholarships to students at an annual awards ceremony, held April 6 in the college’s Civic Center. Vance County Schools Youth Empowerment Academy
A total of eight middle school students, who are currently on long-term suspension, are receiving academic support through the new Vance County Schools Youth Empowerment Academy. The academy has been operating for the last few weeks in a portion of the old two-story building across from the campus of Eaton-Johnson Middle School. Vance County Schools Technology Committee at Work
Members of the Vance County Schools Technology Committee are continuing to gather information from companies for computer hardware and software for teachers and students to use in the upcoming school year. E.M. Rollins Elementary Will Become STEAM School
Vance County Schools has received preliminary approval from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction to establish a STEAM Academy, as part of a restart school strategy, at E.M. Rollins Elementary School. The school system submitted a restart school application for E.M. Rollins to the state department in March. VGCC adds fully-online Associate in Arts degree to VOLT
The “Vanguard Online Learning through Technology” (VOLT) initiative at Vance-Granville Community College is entering its second year in operation and preparing to add a new program option. VOLT courses are for adult learners who need an online-only educational experience. When the fall semester begins in August, such students will be able to start work on an Associate in Arts degree. Public Comment Sessions Begin April 13 on North Carolina’s K-12 Education Plan for Every Student Succeeds Act

VGCC to hold 32nd Benefit Golf Tournament on May 3, 2016
Vance-Granville Community College’s 32nd Annual Endowment Fund Golf Tournament, presented by Union Bank, will be held at the Henderson Country Club on Tuesday, May 3, 2016. All event proceeds support the mission of the college, the Endowment Fund and student scholarships.
