VGCC offers Continuing Education class for Cosmetologists
Vance-Granville Community College is offering a new course this summer for licensed cosmetologists who need to update their skills and maintain their professional credentials. The one-day course, called “Color Now,” is scheduled to be held at the college’s Main Campus in Vance County on Monday, June 23, from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. The same course will also be offered on Monday, July 21, from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the college’s Franklin County Campus, near Louisburg. VGCC course to help Health Care Organizations transition to new Coding System
Vance-Granville Community College will soon offer training to help medical coders and other professionals to prepare for important changes to the health care system. “ICD-10,” a 96-hour course, will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 until 9 p.m., July 7 through Oct. 27, on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. Justin Care, a junior at Northern Vance High School, has been selected to attend the 2014 U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) Summer Seminar program in Annapolis, Md. The U.S. Naval Academy invited a select group of approximately 2,550 young men and women from around the nation and abroad. The Summer Seminar is a fast paced leadership experience for rising seniors in high school. Northern Vance Students Honored as N.C. Scholars
There were 18 members of the Class of 2014 at Northern Vance High School who were honored at the North Carolina Scholars dinner and recognition event on May 20, for being academic leaders in their graduating class. The event was sponsored by the Henderson Rotary Club and was held at the Henderson Country Club in Henderson. NC School Districts Committing Early for Home Base Optional Tools to Support Instruction
Although the deadline for opting in is July 15, many North Carolina school districts have begun committing $4 per student to purchase the optional, or “opt-in,” portions of the statewide suite of technology tools known as Home Base. This statewide project is nearing the end of its year-long rollout to provide digital tools and learning resources for local educators and students, on top of the resources in the free, required portion of Home Base, such as PowerSchool. Vance County Schools will be hosting school bus driver training sessions Monday, June 23, through Wednesday, June 25, in Room 112 at Dabney Elementary School. The Office Administration Club at Vance-Granville Community College hosted two guest speakers as the spring 2014 semester drew to a close. A “lunch and learn” exclusively for club members on April 30 featured Marianne Durling, Director of Health Information Management for Granville Health System. Brian Creasman, assistant superintendent for Administrative Services and Instructional Support with Vance County Schools, has been selected to participate in the SUPES Academy, one of the country’s premiere training programs for aspiring superintendents. VGCC holds Fall Semester New Student Orientation in June and July
Throughout June and July, Vance-Granville Community College is holding orientation sessions for new students who are enrolling for the Fall 2014 semester, which begins Monday, Aug. 18. Attending an orientation session is required for all new students in any of the college’s curriculum programs, and for students who are returning to VGCC after being away for three or more years. VGCC instructor graduates from Leadership Program
Cynthia W. Young of Oxford, an instructor for Human Services Technology at Vance-Granville Community College, recently graduated from the North Carolina Community College Leadership Program (NCCCLP). She is one of 29 community college faculty and staff members across the state to complete the program this year. Shad in the Classroom Project at SVHS
Students in science classes at Southern Vance High School again this spring participated in the “Shad in the Classroom” project, a unique program led by the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences. The program provided training, tanks and eggs to 23 schools along the Neuse and Roanoke River Basins in mid-April. The two teams of Clarke Elementary School fifth graders won the award as the “Top School” in the Math Bowl competition hosted again this year at Southern Vance High School on May 1. The Roaring Tigers team from E.O. Young Jr. Elementary School earned honors at the “Top Team” in the competition.
