VGCC Student selected for Leadership Program
Vance-Granville Community College student Theresa Chiplis of Norlina is among just 29 students from across the state who have been selected to participate in the 2013-2014 North Carolina Community College Student Leadership Development Program (SLDP). Vance-Granville Community College recently held a ceremony to celebrate the graduation of ten students from the Phlebotomy training program, which is offered at the college’s Warren County Campus in Warrenton. The honored graduates included Ernestine S. Bryant, Barbara J. Bullock, Laketa D. Bumpers, April M. Haskins, Raymond T. Jones, Darlene Liddane, Melinda J. Matthews, Frank T. McGhee, Jr., Carmen R. Oxford Preparatory High School Announces First Coaches
The new charter school, Oxford Prep, has selected Denny Carroll as the men’s basketball coach and Teri Spence as the volleyball coach. Both of these programs will begin as Junior Varsity, as OPHS will only have 9th graders in the first year. The gymnasium at the Masonic Home for Children will be the home for these new programs, until a permanent facility is constructed in coming years. VGCC offers Glass Dome Jewelry class
Vance-Granville Community College will offer a two-hour class in which participants will learn how to make unique pieces of jewelry. The “Glass Dome Jewelry: Keepsake Pendants” class is scheduled for Saturday, July 27 from 10 a.m. until noon on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. During this class, instructor Alison Beal of Wake Forest will help students make one glass dome pendant necklace and one pair of glass dome earrings. Vance County Schools – Bus Driver Training
Vance County Schools will be hosting bus driver training sessions from July 29 through August 1, in the Drama Room at Southern Vance High School. The sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on each of the four days. Participants must attend all four sessions to be certified as a bus driver. Interested persons are asked to call the school system’s Transportation Department at 438-5012 by Tuesday, July 23, to pre-register for the training sessions.
Changes coming to VGCC Electrical program
As part of a statewide initiative to update technical education programs, Vance-Granville Community College is converting the former “Electrical/Electronics Technology” program into the new Electrical Systems Technology program. The change takes effect as of the fall semester, which begins Aug. 19. The program’s subtle makeover comes in the wake of the N.C. Schools Collect More than 123,000 Books for “Give Five – Read Five” Campaign
Students across the state will be reading new books at home this summer thanks to State Superintendent June Atkinson’s “Give Five – Read Five” campaign. Atkinson launched the initiative in the spring to encourage parents, business leaders and community members to drop off new or gently-used books at their local elementary schools. Over the next few months, donations poured in and by June 15, 74 elementary schools were able to send 123,152 books home with students when the school year …

VGCC names head of new Paralegal degree program
Vance-Granville Community College has appointed Antoinette C. Dickens of Raleigh to lead the college’s new Paralegal Technology degree program. The two-year program officially gets underway when the fall semester begins Aug. 19, and will be based at VGCC’s Franklin County Campus near Louisburg. Dickens brings to her new role experience as both a practicing paralegal and an educator. New VGCC scholarship honors Dr. Beverly Tucker
Volunteers from the Guild Gift Gallery at Maria Parham Medical Center recently presented a gift of $25,000 to the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund that will create a new scholarship. This is the sixth such scholarship established by the Guild Gift Gallery in recent years. Since 2008, the hospital’s Guild has given over $150,000 to the college. A new scholarship has been established at Vance-Granville Community College by volunteers from Maria Parham Medical Center. VGCC offers Manicuring certificate at Warren Campus
Vance-Granville Community College will offer the opportunity to earn the entire curriculum certificate in Manicuring/Nail Technology in just one semester this fall. This certificate program will be available exclusively at VGCC’s Warren County Campus in Warrenton. Under this new scheduling arrangement, students will take the first of two required courses, Manicure/Nail Technology I (COS-121), weekday mornings from Aug. 19 through Oct. 17 in Building 3 on Warren Campus. Vance County Schools – Media Centers Open During Summer
Vance County Schools again this summer is opening its school media centers two days during the week to offer reading resources to local students. The media centers at all 15 local public schools are open each Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through August 1. Students and their parents are urged to visit the media centers and take advantage of their available resources for summer reading and book checkouts.

Oxford Preparatory High School Begins Construction
Work has begun at the new home of Oxford Preparatory High School on 6041 Landis Road in Oxford. Site work is underway, including grading, paving, and water and sewer connections. The modular campus is scheduled to be installed mid- July. Construction is happening quickly in preparation for teachers to begin work in the mid-August and the first day for students on August 26th. NC Schools State Superintendent Calls for Exempting Public School Teachers from Personal State Income Taxes
