Ocracoke Reopens For Visitors Wednesday
Ocracoke will be open for business again at 5 p.m. today (Wednesday), when visitors and other nonresidents will be allowed to return to the island. Access is available by ferry across the Pamlico Sound from Cedar Island and Swan Quarter. The short ferry to Ocracoke from Hatteras, normally the state’s busiest route, is closed while NCDOT repairs storm damage to N.C. 12 on Hatteras Island.

Gov. Bev Perdue and emergency management officials are working to help all communities affected by Hurricane Irene recover and rebuild. “Lives have been lost, homes and property destroyed,” Gov. The Vance County Board of Education has unanimously approved Crystal Richardson as the new principal of New Hope Elementary School. The board took its action during a special meeting held on Wednesday, August 31. Two members of the board, Ronald Kinsley and Dorothy Williams, were not present at the meeting. Public Schools Have Cut More Than 8 Percent Of Staff Since 2008-09 – Revised
North Carolina public schools have lost 16,677.9 positions and laid off 6,096.7 people since the 2008-09 school year in response to state budget cuts, according to the most recent data reported by local school districts and released this week by the NC Department of Public Instruction. It is also important to note, that over that same period of teacher and educator job cuts, North Carolina public school enrollment has grown. Progress Energy to restore 95 percent of customers by midnight Wednesday
RALEIGH, N.C. (Aug. 28, 2011 – 8 p.m.) – Progress Energy crews have restored service to more than 330,000 customers since Hurricane Irene first began lashing the Carolinas on Friday. The company expects to restore service to the majority of remaining customers without power by midnight Tuesday, with 95 percent of restorations complete by midnight Wednesday. We initially reported that June’s numbers were 14.1, however with July’s report, they have adjusted the June number to 14.2%.
