Wray: NC Lottery makes first school payment
$95 million to be used for pre-K education, reducing class size, school construction and college scholarships The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) transferred $95 million last Thursday to the Education Lottery Fund, which will be used to build new schools, reduce class size in the early grades, improve pre-K education programs and provide college scholarships for needy students.

The Henderson City Council voted to ask the Vance County Board of Commissioners to make an offer on the old library on Rose Avenue.
Committee created on youth curfew issue
A public hearing meant to gauge public opinion regarding a petition received from Candice Cash in favor of a youth curfew in Henderson led to the Henderson City Council forming a study committee on the issue at last night’s meeting.
Tuesday’s open line
Well, the Henderson City Council took the bait last night and opted to voice it’s opinion regarding the naming of the Western Outer Loop. In a unanimous vote (with council member Bernard Alston absent from last night’s meeting), the members opted for Option B, which entails naming the section of the Loop from Graham Avenue to Old Oxford Road after Tiny Broadwick, and the segment from Old Oxford Road to Old County Home Road after Martin Luther King. State approves higher performance standards
The State Board of Education today raised proficiency standards for elementary and middle school students when it approved achievement levels for the state’s new end-of-grade mathematics assessments.
Wife drops charge against Dale
The Daily Dispatch is reporting that Shirelle Dale has dropped the misdemeanor assault charges against her husband, the Reverend C.J. Dale, effectively ending the state’s ability to go forward with prosecution.

Gun, knife found at Dabney Elementary
Michael Putney, the principal at Dabney Elementary School, reported to Vance County parents via the Connect Ed telephone system last night that a loaded gun and a knife were found in two separate student backpacks at his school yesterday.
