VGCC completes Plus 50 Grant program
Vance-Granville Community College recently completed a three-year program as part of a national effort to encourage members of the “baby boom” generation to train for new careers. The college had been awarded a $15,000 “Plus 50” Encore Completion Grant from the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), which in turn received its funding from the Deerbrook Charitable Trust. Holiday travelers to top 100M for first time ever; most will drive
The number of holiday travelers this year will top 100 million for the first time, AAA said Tuesday (yesterday). Most of those people will be driving – and fueling up for less than $2 a gallon. The group is expecting 100.5 million people who will travel at least 50 miles from home from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3. An audience of about 150 people gathered in the cafeteria of Northern Vance High School during the evening of December 10 to honor 37 long-time employees who retired by the end of the 2014-2015 school year. Vance County School’s Blakebrough and Crosson Earn Doctoral Degrees
Donna Blakebrough, an assistant principal at Henderson Middle School, and Jacqueline Crosson, assistant principal at New Hope Elementary School and Pinkston Street Elementary School, have earned doctoral degrees in education. Both were notified in late October of their success in completing requirements for the degrees. Blakebrough earned her doctorate in school leadership and administration from N.C. State University. Raleigh – Motorists who travel on northbound Capital Boulevard over the 67-year-old Peace Street bridge in downtown Raleigh will soon be getting a smoother ride. Eight Counties Shift in 2016 Economic Tier Rankings, Vance County Remains Same
The North Carolina Department of Commerce has released the county tier designations for 2016. The designations, which are mandated by state law, play a role in several programs that assist in economic development. Using a formula outlined in General Statue 143B-437.08, N.C. Commerce gathers required statistics for each of North Carolina’s 100 counties, applies the formula and required adjustments, and assigns a tier designation ranking from one to three.
