Vance-Granville Community College held educational programs for students on three campuses in recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Each program called upon students to “paint the campus purple” by either wearing purple or receiving a purple ribbon, which has become the symbol popularly associated with Domestic Violence Awareness Month. NCDOT Begins Work Next Week on the Triangle Expressway
RALEIGH –The N.C. Department of Transportation will begin work next week to repair pavement settlement issues on the Triangle Expressway at two locations. The first location is on northbound N.C. 540 just before Exit 56A (to northbound U.S. 1), and the second location is on northbound N.C. 540 between mile markers 54.2 and 54.4, near Apex. Farmland preservation grant applications are being accpeted
RALEIGH – County governments and nonprofit groups pursuing farmland preservation projects have until Dec. 18 to apply for funding assistance from the N.C. Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund. This year’s request for proposals includes statewide general appropriations of $1.6 million for traditional farm preservation projects and an additional $1 million to protect military base and training buffers. Complete 540 Draft Environmental Impact Statement Signed NCDOT
Raleigh –The N.C. Department of Transportation has received word the Federal Highway Administration has signed the draft environmental impact statement (EIS) for the project known as Complete 540. This work will extend the Triangle Expressway from the N.C. 55 Bypass in Apex to the U.S. 64/U.S. 264 Bypass in Knightdale, completing the 540 Outer Loop around the greater Raleigh area. Registration for classes and orientation sessions for new students have begun for the Spring 2016 semester at Vance-Granville Community College, which starts Monday, Jan. 11, 2016. NC’s 4th Grade NAEP Reading Scores Climb in 2015
North Carolina fourth grade students’ performance on the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in reading topped the national average and increased four points from 2013 and 14 points from 1992 while scores in 4th grade math held steady according to The National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES). At the 8th grade level, reading scores fell below the national average and dropped from 265 in 2013 to 261 in 2015. The state’s math scores in 8th grade also decreased from …

The North Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) approved 14 grants or loans on October 22, totaling $3,828,262. The requests include commitments to create a total of 272 new jobs. Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)/loan approved: Town of Denton (Davidson County): A $400,000 loan to support the reuse of a vacant building that will house Lionshead Specialty Tire and Wheel. Approximately 80 students, school staff members and parents from Aycock Elementary School ate dinner at the Kanki Japanese restaurant at Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, on September 24, as part of their trip to attend a men’s soccer game between N.C. Scammers pretend to be DOJ
Some North Carolina consumers have reported getting calls from people pretending to be with the North Carolina Department of Justice who demand that they pay a $1,000 fine for unpaid taxes or face immediate arrest. The calls even appear to come from NCDOJ’s main office number, (919) 716-6400. But the fines aren’t real, and the callers are scammers who have figured out how to manipulate Caller ID technology to make it look like they’re calling from our office. Scammers often …

In an effort to keep children safe the local Downtown businesses will host Trick-or-Treat on Friday, October 30th from 4:30pm until 6:00pm.
