Vance-Granville Community College Spanish instructor Margaret Chaves-Smith of Oxford is one of the newest citizens of the United States. A native of Costa Rica, Chaves-Smith has lived in the United States for 21 years and has been a full-time faculty member at VGCC since 2000. NCDOT to Close I-85 Ramp in Vance County
Raleigh-N.C. Department of Transportation contractors will close the I-85 northbound on-ramp at N.C.39 (Andrews Avenue) on Friday, June 26. The closure, part of a project to improve 20.6 miles of I-85 in Vance and Warren counties, will remain in place until early 2017. VGCC launches online scholarship application
A new online system is now available for Vance-Granville Community College students to apply for scholarships established by local citizens and businesses through the college’s Endowment Fund. The online application can be accessed at scholarships.vgcc.edu. To use the system, a student must already be admitted to VGCC and have been assigned a username and password, which they also use for other online college services. New Round of Rural Grants Will Mean More Than 1,300 New Jobs
The North Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) approved 15 grants or loans on June 18, totaling more than $6 million with the commitment of 1,322 new jobs. Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)/loans approved include: City of Lexington (Davidson County): $750,000 loan to Masterbrand Cabinets to support the reuse of a vacant industrial building located at the Sapona Business Park. Search Warranty Yields Marijuana Arrest
On Thursday, June 18, 2015, members of the Henderson Police Department Special Operations Unit executed a search warrant at 419 College Street in Henderson. As a result of the search, officers located a quantity of marijuana. Kahlil Hicks, 19, 410 Julia Street, Henderson was charged with possession with the intent to manufacture, sell/deliver marijuana, manufacturing marijuana, and possession of marijuana drug paraphernalia. VGCC Welding program expands this fall
Welding students at Vance-Granville Community College will have more educational options when the fall semester begins on Aug. 17. The college is adding an Associate in Applied Science Degree program in Welding Technology, which students can generally complete in five semesters. VGCC has offered a three-semester diploma program in the trade for more than 40 years.
