WRAL to run Vance murder mystery
Editor’s Note: This post was moved from it’s original post date of February 14, 2008 by readers’ requests. Alice Burgess ** Updated — Reward now $50,000** During the last two weeks of this month, television station WRAL will run an NC Wanted program featuring an unsolved Vance County murder.
Thursday’s open line
Once again, discussions about recruiting and retaining quality teachers totally avoid the obvious solution: pay them more money for what already they do. Instead, they want to add Saturdays and after-school activities to the workweek and offer teachers mileage to the extra training sessions, something most professionals already have and take for granted. Heck, when I was a record store flunky I got mileage for picking up special orders at the warehouse.
Wednesday’s open line
The average North Carolina family needs $42,841 to meet their basic needs…unless you live in Wake County. According to the 2000 Census, median income in Vance County was $36,389. We doubt it’s gone up since then.

When I first started teaching public school way back in the late 20th century, I was determined that I wasn’t going to spend my own money on my classroom, nor was I going to provide school supplies for my students.
Home in Henderson will continue service
A rumor has been floating around that Home in Henderson will cease operation on March 21, 2008.

My friends, the the great experiment: higher teacher pay to attract a higher quality of teachers. Will it work? For that matter, how do you tell a great teacher from a mediocre one on a resume? (For what it’s worth, we don’t think it will work as long as the teachers are being judged on standardized test outcomes.)

The article WRAL to run Vance murder mystery now has the largest number of reader comments in the two year history of HiH. As a ignorant “transplant”, I didn’t know what I was getting into when I agreed to run the story of the murder of Alice Burgess and her family’s quest for justice and closure. If I had… I would have done it anyway. Here’s hoping some good will come of having run it.
