Here’s an interesting article about a subject near and dear to our heart: education funding. Maybe size doesn’t matter after all? If small counties like Vance are getting all of the education dollars, they how come my classroom doesn’t have wood paneling and gold inlay yet? More importantly, why is Wake County’s local supplement so much bigger? Riddle me this on today’s open line.

For those of you who have been complaining for the last 24 hours, I do not live in front of my computer. When a comment goes into moderation, I am not poised on the edge of my seat ready to examine it. If I did stay at my computer all the time, a moderation queue would hardly be necessary, would it? Frankly, if I want to take a day off away from the blog, I’m entitled. Deal with it. Here’s …

Although this committee does not get a lot of attention, often the success or failure of any institution lies in its ability to maintain accurate records and to have a system to accurately and efficiently recall information from those records. One of the challenges career teachers face in the discharge of their duties is the loss of “institutional memory” because of …

We realized yesterday that the link for the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central North Carolina banner had gone stale. We’ve revamped it, as we have our short narrative on the subject, and we encourage you to check it out and consider giving of your time or hard-earned money to this (in our humble opinion) very worthy cause. With that, we give you the open line.
NC Textbook Commission to meet
Editor’s Note: For those of you who are as concerned as we are about textbooks that weigh a ton and don’t seem to contain any useful information, this is one to which some attention should be devoted. Good education, unlike salami, doesn’t come by the pound. The North Carolina Textbook Commission will hold its Spring Planning Meeting on April 19-20 in the Edinburgh Board Room, Sheraton Greensboro Hotel at Four Seasons/Koury Convention Center, Greensboro.

Monday’s tragedy at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg brings into stark focus one of the most tragic American, if not human, flaws:
Tuesday’s open line
Y’all, seeing as how gas prices are going through the ceiling, we’ve been tinkering with the idea of dusting off the Fuel Watch once again. What do you think? On a more serious note, our hearts go out to those victims and their families in Blacksburg, Virginia at Virginia Tech. We here at HiH still believe despite all evidence to the contrary that by working together we can pull our culture out of the free-fall we fear that it is …

Here’s an article from the Raleigh News & Observer sent to us by a long-time reader we thought was of interest. It makes the bold claim that arts education and creative thinking is lacking is the North Carolina high school curriculum. What! Children do not live by the three R’s alone? Go light, heretics, go light…
Opinion: Apples and oranges of the computer age
