After nearly 90 minutes of library budget talks Wednesday night, we wish we had some brilliant flash of insight that would allow us to slice through the Gordian knot of Henderson finances and lead the way to a triumphant future for our fair city.

Guest post: Prayer meeting brings unity
Prayer for God to shed his grace on our community continues. Like the first prayer meeting two weeks ago, Tuesday evening’s gathering crossed racial and denominational lines, emphasizing the unity we have in Jesus Christ.
Opinion: Police placed in no-win situation
Crime is not a Flint Hill problem. If vehicle break-ins in the Old West End, shootings on Johnson Street and shoplifting at Wal-Mart aren’t enough to convince you, the slaying of Betty Carey at her home in the Parham Road area over the weekend should be.
Opinion: Junkyards need to take first step
The auto repair shops in and around Henderson are predictably unhappy with the city’s proposed amortization ordinance, which would put a dozen of them out of business and and force at least 20 others to spend some money to comply with zoning rules. As The Daily Dispatch reported today, many plan to fight the proposal when it comes before the City Council.
Opinion: Raemac deserves small-business award
The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce named Raemac Transportation its Small Business of the Year at a luncheon at Henderson Country Club on Thursday, and we can’t think of a more worthy winner.
Analysis: Sorting out some facts on the block
One of the pleas of the Embassy Square Foundation board members who met with the Henderson City Council on Tuesday night was for help getting out their message — a message they said has been distorted or lost amid critics misinformation.
Opinion: Embassy questions linger
Tuesday night’s love fest between city officials and leaders of the Embassy Square Foundation was a wonderful pep rally for the project and for those involved. It did not, however, move the city one step closer to resolving its financial problems or open the second phase of the cultural center up to any serious questioning.
Opinion: End the phony hiring freeze
When is a hiring freeze not a hiring freeze? When it’s operated by the Vance County government.
Blackout brings home group approach to problems
The Pinkston Street Steppers wow the crowd with their opening performance Saturday. All kinds of people performed Saturday at the Aycock Recreation Complex as part of the Blackout Arts Festival.
Opinion: City makes good use of Web
The city’s new, improved Web site is a week old today, and it’s time for all of us at home in Henderson to say thanks.
Opinion: Tuition break is a practical proposal
Last week’s introduction of legislation in the General Assembly to let illegal immigrants attend University of North Carolina system schools at in-state rates has produced a backlash that is driving us to fits of ranting and raving.
Opinion: Stop using cops as couriers
Henderson’s expanded, much-improved Web site becomes a reality sometime today. It, not a police cruiser, is the best vehicle for distributing information. Something happened at Monday night’s City Council meeting that was easy to miss but that says a lot about the mess we Hendersonians find ourselves in.
Opinion:
I’m a Tar Heel born, I’m a Tar Heel bred, and when I die, I’ll be Tar Heel dead. To be honest, we’ve always wondered at the wisdom of bringing death into a fight song, but today we share the sentiment of many folks in Vance County: We could die happy after the University of North Carolina’s championship victory in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament Monday night.
Opinion: A great day in Henderson
When even the weather cooperates on April Fools’ Day, you know you’re doing something right.
Opinion: Slow road sets right example
With one speed hump painted yellow, a three-man city crew paints the second on Granite Street on Thursday. The humps ensure that a green light at Garnett Street won’t entice drivers to race down the road. There’s no getting around the need to go slow on Granite Street now.
Opinion: Let the troopers patrol I-85
Much is made of the perception that the state has done essentially nothing for Henderson and Vance County through our tribulations of recent years.
Opinion: College officiating is foul
It says a lot about the sorry state of college basketball officiating that two of the biggest calls in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament — at least in the eyes of local fans — are deservedly controversial.
Opinion: Now that’s a chicken sandwich
Sometimes it seems like our No. 1 commodity in Henderson is fast food.
Opinion: Take a stand on the ops center
We applaud the City Council’s push to produce policies that provide consistent responses to recurring situations, such as requests for lower speed limits on residential streets and efforts to hold events with alcohol on city property. But one obvious policy has slipped through the cracks amid talk of beer and music and fried fish.
Opinion: It’s the thought that counts the loss
For all you would-be Ken Jenningses out there, consider the plight of the Quiz Bowlers on Saturday afternoon at the Vance County Administration Building on Young Street.
