Senator Richard Burr: No Bonuses for Tax Cheats Act
Did you know that IRS employees that don’t pay their taxes can still get bonuses from Uncle Sam? A review by the Treasury Inspector General found that IRS employees who are known tax cheats still received taxpayer funded bonuses. Report found that IRS tax cheaters received bonuses I think this is wrong. I’m working with a bipartisan group of senate colleagues to put a stop to it. This week, I introduced the No Bonuses for Tax Cheats Act which would …
Senator Richard Burr: President Obama vetoes military funding
Last week, in a public ceremony, President Obama vetoed the National Defense Authorization Act, a bill that funds our military. President Obama vetos military funding I am very disappointed in the president’s decision to veto this popular bipartisan bill. President Obama’s veto not only threatens the military readiness and security of our nation, but also represents a stunning rejection of the longstanding tradition of casting partisan politics aside to prioritize and protect the brave men and women in uniform who …

White House: Wednesday is Back to the Future Day
Great Scott! Today marks an important day in American history (or, at least, in American cinematic history): It’s the date to which Marty McFly traveled into the “future” in Back to the Future Part II. We’ve come a long way in the 30 years that have passed since the original Back to the Future came out. We’re going to spend tomorrow talking about where we’re going in the next 30. Tomorrow, we’ll host a series of conversations with scientists and innovators …
Congresswoman Renee Ellmers: Giving Back to Our Veterans
Photo of the Week After months of planning, it was wonderful to meet many of the employers and H.R. teams that attended our Fourth Annual Recruit-a-Vet Job Fair on Tuesday. We had 30 local employers on site to meet with veterans, answer questions, and assist in filling out paperwork. It was one of our most successful veterans fairs to date! Weekly Update: One of my favorite activities that I host each year is the Recruit-a-Vet Employment Fair. As the …
White House Weekly Address: Working for Meaningful Criminal Justice Reform
In this week’s address, the President highlighted the problems in our criminal justice system. Our country faces a vicious cycle of poverty, criminality, and incarceration that traps too many Americans and weakens too many communities. There are 2.2 million people behind bars in America today, compared to 500,000 just 30 years ago. This topic isn’t new – the President has talked about the unfairness of much of the criminal justice system since his time in the Senate. And while we’ve …

Senator Richard Burr: VOTE NOW on Obama’s trade deal
This week, President Obama announced that negotiators have reached a deal on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade agreement between 12 countries, including the United States. While I believe that trade can open markets for American goods and services to be sold all over the world, the TPP is a bad deal for America. The Obama administration is rigging the system to pick winners and losers in favor of industries that he and his allies support. I cannot support a deal …

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers: Visiting Fort Bragg
Video of the Week: This week on a POLITICO panel, “Policy Levers for Boomer Heart Health,” I discussed some of the ways we can address heart health through policy such as the 21st Century Energy and Commerce Cures initiative which expedites the development of life-saving cures and treatments. Click here to watch the panel discussion. Weekly Update: At the start of this week, I led a letter to the Secretaries of two government agencies urging relief for our healthcare …
White House Weekly Address: Congress Should Do its Job and Pass a Serious Budget
In this week’s address, the President emphasized that we need to do everything we can to strengthen economic growth and job creation. This week, despite the fact that more than half of Republicans in Congress voted to shut down the government for the second time in two years, Congress managed to pass a last-minute bill to keep the government open for another ten weeks. That means that in December, we could face yet another Republican threat to shut down the …
Senator Richard Burr: Intel hearing, 440th Airlift Wing, Pope visit
Senate Intelligence Hearing Last week, I chaired the third open Senate Intelligence Committee hearing of 2015. National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers testified on several key intelligence matters. When asked if private email servers, like the one used by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, could put national security in jeopardy Admiral Rodgers said that it “represents opportunity” and would be a “top priority for foreign intelligence services.” Pushing to Maintain the 440th Airlift Wing at Fort Bragg Senator Tillis and …

White House Weekly Address: Dispose of Your Expired and Unwanted Prescription Drugs
In this week’s address, on “National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day,” the President spoke about the importance of preventing and treating substance use disorders. Overdoses from prescription pain medications kill thousands of Americans every year, and more often than not, those drugs come from the family medicine cabinet. In addition, many heroin users started out by misusing prescription drugs. That’s why it’s important to take advantage of the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day and safely, conveniently, and responsibly dispose of …
