Two homicides in two days this weekend
On September 24, 2010 around 11:00 p.m., officers with the Henderson Police Department’s Patrol Division responded to The Variety and Tobacco Mart located on E. Andrews Ave in Henderson North Carolina in reference to a subject who had allegedly been shot.
Colorfall Festival October 2
This year’s Colorfall Festival will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Proceeds from the festival will benefic The ARC of Vance County. Openings for food and craft vendors are still available. Interested parties should contact Nancy Ormond by email.
Friday/weekend open line
I’ve been asked several times why Home in Henderson is not participating in this year’s candidate’s debate. The answer, very simply, is that we were not asked to participate. I wonder why. After all, I went to all of the meetings, contributed actively, paid HiH‘s share of the costs when it was appropriate, and I didn’t fling poo at a single candidate during the events, as tempting as it sometimes was. Feel free to theorize on this weekend’s open line.
Etheridge votes for Small Business Jobs Act
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) today voted in support of the Small Business Jobs Act that will create jobs, expand credit, and cut taxes for small businesses. The legislation, H.R. 5297, passed the House by a vote of 237-187.
Special city council meeting on joint funding Sept. 28
Henderson Mayor Pete O’Geary has called a special meeting of the Henderson City Council for the purpose of discussing jointly funded projects of Henderson and Vance County. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers in City Hall, 134 Rose Avenue in Henderson, North Carolina.

VCS Building & Grounds meeting cancelled
The Vance County Board of Education’s Building & Grounds Committee meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 23, 2010 has been cancelled. No reason was given for the cancellation, nor was a reschedule date given.
Golf tourney to benefit SVHS art dept. Oct. 29
The Art Department at Southern Vance High School, under the direction of Glenn Garrison, is hosting a fund raising golf tournament at Kerr Lake Country Club on Friday, October 29, 2010.

County tech. committee meeting cancelled
Tomorrow morning’s meeting of the Vance County Board of Commissioner’s Technology Committee has been cancelled. Here is an overview of what was to be discussed at the meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. in the Commissioner’s Conference Room. That room is located in the County Administration Building, 122 Young Street in Henderson, North Carolina.
Council hears presentation on citizen review boards
Police Chief disputes statistical relevance of increased complaints At the outset of the meeting, with members Garry Daeke and Brenda Peace-Jenkins not in attendance, City Manager Ray Griffin explained that the special session of the Henderson City Council was called because of a request by local NAACP chapter President Horace Bullock for the council to create a police citizen review board.
To the editor: Opposed to means of firing range block
I am not here tonight to speak in favor of the proposed firing range on Glebe Road (although I am not opposed to it) but rather to protest the manner in which the County is trying to block it.

In a political era where the majority of voters seem to be either blue or red (as in blue states and red states) with only a small minority “moderate purple”, it seems unusual to see politicians crossing party lines to offer endorsements to candidates of the other persuasion.
