The 2006 short session of the North Carolina General Assembly has ended, and I’m proud to report that numerous newspapers, Governor Mike Easley, and various advocacy groups from across the state have all said that it was one of the most successful and productive sessions in recent memory.
Violent crime up in July
A report issued by the Henderson Police Department for July showed that Part I violent crime totals for the month of July were 25, up from five in July of 2005.

Combined abatement letters may violate due process
Code Compliance Director Corey Williams reported to the Land Planning and Development Committee on Wednesday that an attempt to combine a “Notice and Order of Abatement” and a “Civil Penalty Notification” letter may violate the landowner’s due process right of appeal.

The Human Resources Committee will be meeting at 8:00 a.m. at City Hall. At 4:30, the Human Relations Commission is scheduled to meet at City Hall as well. An obvious topic for the Human Resources Committee is to develop procedure and criteria for the replacement of Henderson Police Department Chief Glen Allen. At Wednesday’s Land Planning and Development Committee meeting, City Manager Jerry Moss complained to members about landlords who dump the contents of rental units into the street.
Amortization ordinance approaches effective date
According to Erris Dunston, Planning Director for the City of Henderson, the first effective date of the recently approved Amortization Ordinance is coming up on September 10 of this year.

Not far from where I grew up is the unincorporated Town of Motels, Breezewood, Pennsylvania, at the confluence of Interstate 70 and Interstate 76 (the Pennsylvania Turnpike).
