Henderson’s amortization ordinance is going back to the drawing board under the guidance of new Planning Director Erris Dunston.
Pick of the day: Life in the ETJ
Henderson’s Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction is one of those great mysteries in life. Extending 1.5 miles beyond the city limits, the ETJ covers an area larger than the city itself, and there’s perpetual public confusion about what city laws do and don’t apply in that zone. Henderson has the power to enforce more types of ordinances in the ETJ than it does; the city basically limits itself to planning and zoning authority. That authority will be on display today at 3:30 p.m. …
Ward 3 gets ward-seat contest; Wilkerson runs again
Perhaps the Fourth of July holiday hangover has worn off for potential Henderson election candidates. At least two more seats are assured of having someone in them, and Ward 3 is home to the city’s second confirmed contested race after three candidates filed today.
On the agenda: City Council has junkyards in view
The Henderson City Council could decide how to proceed tonight on an issue it was quite happy to postpone two months: a phaseout of auto repair facilities and junkyards that predate and don’t conform to the city’s zoning ordinance.
Milestones: Just say no — a lesson for Hendersonians
Today we welcome our first weekly columnist to HomeinHenderson.com, who writes under the name Miles Gloriosus (all we’re saying is that the name comes from a character in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”). Miles will post his Milestones column each Monday at 6 a.m. You can count on him usually to be funny and always to be insightful. Enjoy.
On the agenda: County must make lasting decisions
The Vance County Board of Commissioners will be asked to pick two consultants for long-term projects and to endorse two long-term improvement efforts during its meeting tonight.
Pick of the day: Coming-out party for a planner
A light agenda awaits the Planning Board today in what will be Henderson Planning Director Erris Dunston’s first chance to work with the board. The board will hold one public hearing, on Robert and JoAnn Esquivel’s request for Salare Inc. to rezone a 6.29-acre tract at 88 Parham Spring Lane in the Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction from R-15M (low-to-moderate-density residential with HUD code homes) to I-2 (industrial nonpark). And the board can introduce Dunston to the hubbub over the zoning ordinance and …

It’s time to study up on the partnership
Before the Vance County Board of Commissioners votes to endorse the Henderson-Vance Economic Partnership on Monday night, everyone has the chance to do some homework on the topic.

35 vehicles participate in motorcade
The Motorcade for Nonviolence makes its way down Oxford Road shortly after departing the armory parking lot Saturday afternoon. The Motorcade for Nonviolence snaked through and beyond Henderson’s four wards Saturday afternoon with 29 cars and six motorcycles.
Pick of the day: Poker’s main event
We at HomeinHenderson have a confession: The national addiction to poker has hooked us. We like to play poker, watch poker, read about poker — we probably need an intervention. Until then, ours eyes and Web browsers are trained on Las Vegas for the main event of the World Series of Poker, the biggest live tournament in history. The astounding official numbers: 5,619 players entered, at $10,000 apiece, for a total prize pool of $52,818,610. That’s more than double the …
Opinion: No reason not to roll against violence
The red line shows the route of today’s motorcade. About 3 this afternoon, a motorcade will set out from the armory on Dabney Drive to tour the city, and we expect the drive to be an eye-opening experience for many.
Fresh pick of the day: Local produce
One of the often-overlooked gems of Henderson is the farmers’ market, which is open in season on Saturday mornings. We got a wonderful e-mail message about the market this week, so we’ll let this reader-correspondent sing the market’s praises: “Last Saturday was the opening of the local Farmers’ Market. The location is on William Street directly behind Vance Furniture. Every Saturday morning you will find a wide variety of fresh, locally grown produce. Last Saturday they had cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, …
Wester poses re-election challenge to Yount
A Henderson City Council incumbent became the only person this week to file to run in the Oct. 11 elections, but John Wester added an interesting twist: He filed to seek the at-large seat from Ward 3, not the ward seat.
Weed and Seed area wins coalition’s support
The proposed borders for the Henderson-Vance Weed and Seed area won the endorsement of the Vance County Coalition Against Violence on Thursday night.
Pick of the day: Championship splash
The Vance Aquatics Club Barracudas didn’t win a Durham Summer Swim League dual meet this year (or last year, for that matter), but coaches Wendi and Chris Leas bring a group of improving swimmers into the league championship meet today and Saturday at the Koury Natatorium, in the shadow of the Smith Center at UNC-Chapel Hill. The Barracudas will get to measure themselves individually against every swimmer in the league. The children 8 and under start at 6 p.m. today. …
Still no candidates this week
For those anxiously awaiting the field of candidates for Henderson’s fall elections, this week has brought no additions. No one has filed for mayor, although Clem Seifert has indicated his intention to run for re-election. And the only City Council candidates are the four who filed Friday: incumbents Mary Emma Evans, Bernard Alston and Mike Rainey and Evans challenger Glean Henderson Jr. Vance Elections Director Faye Gill says no one has filed in Middleburg or Kittrell, each of which has …
Henderson never had a shot at entertainment district
Rep. Michael Wray offered some clarification Wednesday night on why Roanoke Rapids will be the home to an entertainment district that will bring thousands of jobs, while Henderson never had a chance to compete for the economic prize.
