Pick of the day: Filing period approaches

Jason Feingold June 30, 2005 Quick hits

We normally wait until the day of an event to make it the Pick of the Day, but this is really the Pick of the Month: The filing period for Henderson’s Oct. 11 municipal elections, as well as those in Kittrell and Middleburg, opens Friday and runs for five weeks until Aug. 5. We’re hopeful that Henderson builds on the increased competition of the city elections two years ago, when Mayor Chick Young’s retirement drew three council members into the …

Pick of the day: Evidence for the budget talks

Jason Feingold June 29, 2005 Uncategorized

The City Council will try again this evening to pass a budget for the fiscal year that starts in two days, and member could have a little more information at hand as they argue about the economy and what Henderson’s citizens can afford. The state Employment Security Commission should release the county unemployment figures for May by midday. Vance County has seen better numbers this year, but it still ranks near the bottom of the state in employment. porn emoticonsgif …

Pick of the day: Keeping up appearances

Jason Feingold June 28, 2005 Uncategorized

The City Council made several routine appointments to commissions in its spare time Monday night, including keeping Joseph Mahaffey on the Henderson-Vance-Oxford-Granville Airport Authority, Bennett Perry on the library board of trustees and Kevin Boone on the Recreation Commission and adding Martha Zollicoffer to the library board. Celester Clark received a reappointment to the Henderson Community Appearance Commission as well, but four vacancies on that commission went unfilled because no one applied. The Clean Up Henderson Committee shows that people …

Opinion: A budget delay might be best

Jason Feingold June 27, 2005 Opinion

Henderson Police Chief Glen Allen likes to say that budget season is the busiest eight months of the year — only a slight exaggeration about how long the budget process lasts in the city. Would it be the worst thing in the world if the process didn’t end tonight?

Pick of the day: Late-night budget action

Jason Feingold June 27, 2005 Quick hits

There’s a lot on the agenda for tonight’s City Council meeting (see related story), which is to be expected when there’s a three-week gap between meetings and when your humble editor is on vacation (things always go crazy at the office when you’re away). But the biggest issue has to be the budget for 2005-06, a fiscal year that starts Friday. Based on the agenda, we don’t expect the council to take up the spending and taxing plan until some …

Within the hour, the congressman who represents Henderson and northern Vance County, Democrat G.K. Butterfield of Wilson, is due to land at Raleigh-Durham International Airport after a fact-finding one-day visit to the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. His 7 1/2 hours at the base with fellow members of the House Armed Services Committee included a briefing and a tour of the hospital, interrogation area and an unoccupied cellblock. It will be interesting to hear what Butterfield, whose district includes …

Pick of the day: Attacking homelessness

Jason Feingold June 24, 2005 Quick hits

Mayor Clem Seifert’s homelessness committee reaches out with a series of focus groups throughout the day at the Senior Center downtown. The series of discussions will give service providers, the homeless themselves and other groups a chance to talk about what’s needed and what can be done to solve the problem of homelessness. (This would be one of those Seifert initiatives, with arrangements by assistant Sandra Wilkerson, that you probably wouldn’t have seen under Chick Young.) The public will get …

To our readers: On anonymity and civility

Jason Feingold June 24, 2005 Opinion

Well, this is what happens when I try to take a whole day away from HomeinHenderson.com: All heck breaks loose, and, according to Google Maps, I’m 776 miles away from the storm. That’s a better position to run away and hide than to play diplomat, but with the help of you, the readers, I’ll give it a try.
