In March of 2010, three officers from the Henderson Police Department attended the Safe Kids North Carolina Annual Conference.

All three officers are members of Safe Kids Henderson-Vance.

During the conference, Safe Kids Henderson-Vance won two awards. The first was a Certificate of Achievement for helping Safe Kids North Carolina raise $10,000 dollars for the Marine Corps Marathon, and the second award was for Most Creative Safe Kids Event for the Safe Kids Apprenticeship.

The Safe Kids Apprenticeship was created by Safe Kids Henderson-Vance’s Coordinator SPO Angela Feingold. During the apprenticeship, middle school students were taught water safety, fire safety, wheeled-sport safety, and child passenger seat safety by Safe Kids Henderson-Vance members. The students then put together lessons plans, practiced their presentation, and taught safety lessons to second grade students.

The apprenticeship was a success, and members of Safe Kids Henderson-Vance are currently teaching their second Safe Kids Apprenticeship at the Henderson Middle School Citizen Schools programs. These new apprentices will present their program to the elementary school students in late April.
