Henderson, NC plans to break the new “Carry in Parks” law

According to Grass Roots North Carolina, Henderson plans to break the new “Carry in Parks” law.  See their press release listed below:

It has come to GRNC’s attention that the town of Henderson, NC is planning an “end-around” on HB 650, the recently-ratified “Castle Doctrine/Carry in Parks” law that we all fought so long and hard for.

• Henderson, NC has decided that they don’t want permittees lawfully defending themselves and families.
• They are currently working to pass a city ordinance to ban concealed carry in parks.
• Such a ban is a clear and direct violation of the new law that goes into effect December, 1.
• This new law only allows bans in certain “special” areas of parks that are clearly defined by law to include only: Park buildings, athletic fields, swimming pools, and athletic facilities.
• Indiscriminate, park-wide bans are specifically not permitted under the new law.

Immediate action is needed to stamp-out illegal municipal gun bans before they spread!

• Let’s make our slap-down of Henderson’s proposed law an example to other cities and towns (possibly yours) that may be contemplating similar actions.
• Contact the Mayor of Henderson, NC.
• Tell him to stop working to break the law before it’s even in force!

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED:

• Contact James D. “Pete” O’Geary, Mayor of Henderson, NC.
• Email him at: pogeary[at]ci.henderson.nc.us
• Deliver this (polite) message:

Mayor O’Geary,

It has come to my attention that you intend to ban guns in parks in response to recent ratification of HB 650, “Castle Doctrine and Concealed Carry Permitted in Parks”.

You should be aware that, although this new law does permit posting against concealed carry in certain clearly and narrowly-defined areas (posted buildings, posted athletic fields, posted swimming pool areas and posted athletic fields), park-wide bans are specifically prohibited by this new law.

Despite the legal possibility of posting against concealed carry in narrowly-defined areas of Henderson parks, I encourage you not do so; it is a bad idea as it leaves law-abiding individuals and families defenseless against ever-increasing violent crime.

North Carolinian Concealed Handgun Permitees have shown themselves to be extremely responsible and are not a problem that you should be concerned about. Places within Henderson, NC where citizens are not permitted to effectively defend themselves IS a problem that you should begin working to solve.

Please abandon your plan to disarm responsible permit holders even in limited areas of Henderson, NC parks.

I will be following progress through Grass Roots North Carolina.

Sincerely,

A concerned NC voter
