$5.3 million awarded to NCDA&CS to establish produce safety program
The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services recently received a five-year, $5.3 million grant from the Food and Drug Administration to enhance produce safety. The funding will be used to ensure that North Carolina farmers and producers are ready to comply with the stricter production and harvest requirements of the federal Food Safety Modernization Act. “This funding will help our Food and Drug Protection Division support farmers and producers in getting their businesses ready to meet these new requirements,” …
VGCC students awarded Golden LEAF Scholarships
A group of ten students from Vance-Granville Community College recently received scholarships through the Golden LEAF Scholarship program for the North Carolina Community College System. The scholarship program, designed to help North Carolinians attend the state’s community colleges, is funded through a $750,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. Kerr Lake Regional Water System Discolored Water Notice
Customers who receive water via the Kerr Lake Regional Water System may be currently experiencing discolored water from their taps. The City believes this is a result of the Kerr Lake Regional Water plant experiencing manganese from the surface water which was removed, but was captured in the remaining sludge and is now showing up in the distribution system. NC Navigator Consortium awarded $2.44 milion for Affordable Care Act enrollment, Assistance Available in Vance County
The NC Navigator Consortium, a group of 13 health care, legal aid and social service organizations, has been awarded a $2,444,703 federal grant to help North Carolina consumers enroll in health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act. Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund awards more than $3.8 million for projects
The N.C. Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund recently awarded more than $3.87 million to help communities across the state protect farmland and promote agricultural enterprises. More than $2 million went towards obtaining conservation easements on lands that border military bases in Hyde and Bertie counties. Students Play Critical Role in School Bus Safety
Bright and early this morning, more than 800,000 public school students boarded a school bus and headed off to school. But if past numbers from the state’s annual stop-arm violation count continue to hold true, at least 3,100 vehicles will have illegally passed a stopped school bus while students were trying to get on and off the bus. BeeCheck maps hives and protects pollinators
Recent reports of mosquito spraying for Zika virus and other mosquito-borne diseases in other states have led to many N.C. residents asking what can they do to protect commercial and hobby beehives across the state. The N.C.
