Buckle Up! School Bus Driver ROADeo Competition Set for Today
This Thursday, May 12, school bus drivers from across the state, including Vance County, will gather at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh to demonstrate their skill, knowledge and professionalism at the School Bus Driving Competition – also known as the School Bus Driver ROADeo. Bennett and Hite to Join Vance County Schools
Vance County Schools has a new assistant superintendent for Finance and Business Operations and a new principal for the Vance County Early College High School, following action by the Vance County Board of Education Monday night. Jennifer Bennett has been appointed to the assistant superintendent’s position and Debbie Hite has been appointed as the new principal for Early College. Decision Day at Southern Vance High
The “Decision Day” celebration at Southern Vance High School featured 70 members of the Class of 2016 announcing their plans to attend college in the fall. Austin Dixon, the college advisor at Southern Vance, coordinated the event which involved having each student to come up and sign a large Class of 2016 banner, announce which college or university they will attend and their intended degree major. Reading Fair Winners at Carver Elementary
Carver Elementary School hosted its annual Reading Fair on Thursday, May 5, with nine students in grades 3-5 earning awards for their projects. The Reading Fair involves each student in grades 3-5 doing a project on a book they have read. The project includes making a “book report” with illustrations and written responses explaining the book’s story on a large project board. VGCC awarded grant to bring teachers and manufacturers together
The State Board of Community Colleges has awarded a $10,000 grant to Vance-Granville Community College to support a project that will bring together educators and employers. VGCC and 11 other community colleges received a competitive grant as part of a statewide “Taste of Industry” initiative. VGCC’s grant was the largest awarded by the State Board. At VGCC, the grant will help fund “AMSTA Cruisers 2016,” a three-day event (June 15-17) organized by the Advanced Manufacturing Skills Training Alliance, a partnership …
NFL player-turned-farmer to speak at VGCC Commencement
Vance-Granville Community College will welcome former NFL player and Henderson native Jason Brown to serve as the principal commencement speaker for graduation exercises on Friday, May 13. Daniel Davis of Norlina, parliamentarian of the VGCC Student Government Association, will be the student speaker. VGCC Carpentry program and Granville County Habitat partner to finish house
Students in the Carpentry program at Vance-Granville Community College recently started work on their second project in partnership with Granville County Habitat for Humanity. The first construction project was a home in Oxford that students helped build from start to finish, leading to its dedication in January. This time, students will be completing a home in Henderson. NC Department of Public Instruction Math Survey Open – Public Feedback Sought
Parents, educators and others are invited to provide feedback regarding proposed revisions to the content standards for high school math courses Math I, II and III via a survey available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HSMathDraftStandards The survey will be available through May 20. The NC Department of Public Instruction reviews the state’s Standard Course of Study on a five-year cycle per subject, and mathematics is currently under review. Vance County Schools New Access Control System at Six Pilot Schools Begins May 16th, 2016
Vance County Schools will pilot its new Access Control System at six schools beginning on Monday, May 16, 2016. Jeffrey Allen, the director of student activities and athletics at Vance-Granville Community College, recently received the Laura Thomas Award from the North Carolina Association on Higher Education and Disability (NC AHEAD). The award recognizes an outstanding professional outside of the field of disability services who has demonstrated exemplary support of disability services within a postsecondary academic setting. Vance-Granville Community College will offer a Science Camp for local middle school students this summer at both the college’s Main Campus (in Vance County) and the Franklin County Campus (near Louisburg). Area residents have until Thursday, May 19, to complete the process of registering for Summer Term classes at Vance-Granville Community College. Those classes begin on Monday, May 23. Vance-Granville Community College will soon begin a continuing education program that prepares students for jobs in area medical offices. The Medical Office Assistant training program is scheduled to be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., with an additional 33 hours of coursework online, from May 16 through June 6 on VGCC’s Franklin County Campus near Louisburg.
