Crime and Violence, Suspensions and Expulsions Down in Public Schools in 2011-12
The total number of reportable acts of school crime and violence, short- and long-term student suspensions, and expulsions all decreased in 2011-12 according to the 2011-12 Consolidated Data Report today presented to State Board of Education members. The total number of acts of school crime and violence was the lowest reported number since 2008-09. Vance-Granville Community College will offer a three-hour workshop to help area residents explore a career in medical transcription. “Work at Home as a Medical Transcriptionist” is scheduled to be held Tuesday, Feb. 26 from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. The instructor, Deborah Burns, has been a medical transcriptionist for more than 30 years. New VGCC classes offer instruction in Beekeeping and Raising Chickens
Vance-Granville Community College is offering two new Personal Enrichment courses to help area residents learn how to begin raising bees and chickens. Both are taught by local farmer Mike Holland and will be held in part at the Holland Farm on Lickskillet Road in Warren County. Vance County Schools – High School Exam Schedule for First Semester
The high school exam schedule to end the first semester in Vance County Schools has been announced. First semester exams will be administered at Northern Vance, Southern Vance and Western Vance high schools on Thursday, January 10, and Friday, January 11, during the school day. First and third-period exams will be administered on Thursday, with second and fourth-period exams administered on Friday. Students will be dismissed at the regular time of 3:15 p.m. each day. NC Department of Public Instruction Receives 161 Letters of Intent from Organizations Planning to Open Charter Schools
Community organizations, nonprofits and other interested groups have submitted 161 Letters of Intent to apply to open a public charter school in August 2014. The letters were delivered to the N.C. The Welding Technology program at Vance-Granville Community College recently received international exposure in the form of a glowing article on the web site of Wisconsin-based Miller Electric Mfg. Co. The Student Association of Medical Assistants (SAMA) at Vance-Granville Community College recently helped brighten the holidays for those in need by participating in the Raleigh Rescue Mission’s annual “gift tag” program. The club received 10 gift tags from Raleigh Rescue Mission requesting specific items for a homeless man, woman or child. Vance-Granville Community College is offering Zumba fitness classes through a partnership with Henderson Family YMCA. The classes will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 until 7 p.m. at the YMCA, located at 380 Ruin Creek Road in Henderson. Vance-Granville Community College’s Adult Basic Skills department is sending a message to students who have started but not completed the five-part GED test: “Make a New Year’s Resolution to complete your GED in 2013.” There is a sense of urgency because the current version of the GED, known as the 2002 Series GED Test, will expire at the end of the year.
