Milestones: The Shakedown
(Sammy “The Nickel” Sunoco, Heathcliffe “Tinroof” Shantini, and Michelangelo “Mickey the Shyster” Blacksatterino quietly enter an innocuous Henderson business during regular hours. Blacksatterino carries a suspicious-looking briefcase at his side.)

When I signed my first contract with Vance County Schools, I was faced with the problem of finding a place to live. Having just come from New York, one of the first things I did was walk up and down Garnett Street looking for a for-rent sign above one of the stores. “I done drug water” is the phrase that best expresses the results. Am I the only one who will ever have wanted to live downtown, or do you …

To the editor: Questions on Satterwhite client list
Editor’s Note: The views expressed in this and any other letter to the editor, past, present, or future do not necessarily reflect the editorial opinion of Home in Henderson. After many weeks of questions from the Henderson City Council’s Community Development Committee, and many attempts to get a handle on the concerns of Henderson attorney Michael Satterwhite’s clients, a list was finally presented on Aug 1, 2007.
Opinion: Is it news?
Home in Henderson readers may have noticed the absence of a particular headline today, one that was on the front page of The Daily Dispatch and in the Raleigh News & Observer.

Look around you. According to WRAL, every twelfth person you see has used illegal drugs in the past month. Just for the record, note that the article shows that teachers have one of the lowest rates of illegal drug use. Perhaps its because of what we see drugs doing to children and their families every day. The microphone is on. Step up.

Saturday is Bastille Day, a French holiday which commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison and the beginning of the French Revolution. While it’s always great fun to hate the French, don’t forget to hate their 35 hour work week, their universal health care system, their five weeks of guaranteed vacation per year, and unlimited sick days.

We found the HRC’s report on Deryl Von Williams vs. the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library to be a thoughtful, moderate, and considered document that attempts what we so desperately need in our community: reconciliation. Imagine what we could do if we devoted the energy we normally reserve for vitriol into something more productive. Or do the animosities run so deep in Vance that I’m just having another late night pipe dream? Mull it over on today’s open line.

City employees: that whistling sound you hear overhead is the dreaded Budget Ax coming for your department. Don’t worry, they’ve promised not to touch your big 2.5% increase or your Christmas Bonus. What do we have $463,000 of that the City can live without? Let ’em know on today’s open line.

The Franklin Times is reporting that the Kerr-Tar Hub is erecting a shell building in Franklin County across from the airport. You can read about it here. Note: The Franklin Times Web site is registration-required. Vance County’s adventure in shell buildings was problematic. Will this one fare better? Let your thoughts be known on today’s open line.
To the editor: Local gov’t still a democracy
To the Editor, In response to “Moss to council: Ignore ‘outside forces” published in the Daily Dispatch last Thursday I wonder if city manager Jerry Moss and others who respected the erroneous confidentially of his letter, remember that our local government is still a democracy.

We’re intrigued by the idea of an item-tax for jointly funded projects. We wonder, though, if anyone will go before the County Commission and try to opt out because they don’t use the pool at Aycock Rec. This space is yours. Enjoy.
