It was announced this morning that President Gerald Ford died yesterday at the age of 93. Although his pardon of President Richard Nixon was controversial, and most likely cost him a term of his own in 1976, he succeeded in holding the country together through the twin traumas of Watergate and the aftermath of the Vietnam War. We mourn his passing.

Christmas break is upon us at last. Although I enjoy the time off, I sometimes fear the students will forget half of what we taught them over the holiday. That fear is multiplied many times over during summer recess. Express your thoughts on this or any other topic on today’s open line.

We read in the Daily Dispatch this morning that the City Council wants to amend the minimum housing code so that all habitable rooms have the capacity to be heated to 70 degrees Farenheit. Although we have yet been unable to verify if a selection has been made for principal at Eaton-Johnson Middle School, interim or otherwise, we will say this: years of service at at a middle school are like dog years, and the twenty-eight years we spent at Henderson Middle School should earn us a spot in doggie heaven. Even though we all have our differences, he said, that’s not a reason not to be civil. Are Hendersonians basically uncivil, or simply impassioned? Let your thoughts on this or any other subject be known on today’s open line.

Here’s a handy little site an out-of-town friend introduced us to yesterday evening: www.popcenter.org, a Web page devoted to community-oriented policing. Among the gems it contains is advice on how to handle “Disorderly Youth in Public Places” and a section on graffiti, both useful pieces of information in today’s Henderson. We recommend a look. With that, the floor is yours.

We don’t often state an opinion, but this needs to be said: If readers find the racially-charged rhetoric on this blog distasteful (a position with which the Editor has more than a little sympathy), then we offer this one simple suggestion: change the nature of the discourse. It’s time to move on. If you believe that HiH is a poor ambassador of Henderson-Vance, remember that it does not create reader comments. You do that. We merely provide a forum, just …
