On the governors desk this week is a bill that would establish a college fund for students that would be employed by the state. If the student meets criteria in regards to GPA and graduates within a particular program, then works for the state for a minimum specified number of years, their college loan would be paid for. SS mentioned a seeming emergence cicada’s on yesterday’s open lines.  It seems there is a 13 year cycle of cicada’s that are evolving just now.  An article at AccuWeather.com states:  The cicadas will be present during May and June in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, according to Magicicada.org. I received a call today (On Wednesday) via a relay service usually used reserved for people that are deaf or can not talk to call someone that would otherwise not have the ability to communicate with them.  The operator receives the messages from the disabled person via a computer and speaks the message to you on the phone.  Then you simply tell the operator your response and they type it back to the other person through their machine.  You can …

On the table this week in our state governors office, a bill H270 that would allow the court to as a condition of probation to require the person to not associate with members of a gang, nor wear any clothing, jewelry, or display any signs associated with gangs during their probationary period.  This has not been an option to the courts before.  As previously reported on our website, 60% of Vance County school students recognize gangs in their local schools …

Governor Perdue is scheduled to decide shortly on approving a bill that will increase the speed limit fine in a school zone from $25.00 to $250.00.  If she signs, the bill would become law August 25, 2011. A reminder that city offices will be closed on Friday, and many places of business in the area will be closed as well.  We hope everyone enjoys the holiday weekend.  There’s several activities in the area, a car wash on Friday, and a few Easter Egg hunts for the kids on Saturday.
