We cannot help but notice that of the four guest presentations planned for the Henderson City Council, three of them (Boys and Girls Club, Weed & Seed, and Candice Cash) intersect. Perhaps these groups can ally for their common interest. Speculate on this or any topic you like on today’s open line.

Weekend open line
We drove through Coble Boulevard at approximately 9:30 last night and noted that all was quiet for the few minutes that we were there. There was a police officer in the parking lot of the Skateeum as well. Naturally, we don’t know what happened before or after our very short driving tour. We wonder if an curfew ordinance can be drafted that is not impossible for the police to enforce and that lands responsibility and any incidental expenses squarely in …
On the passing of James Green
We mourn the loss of Attorney James Green which we learned of yesterday. We knew him through our work with the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central North Carolina, and were it not for his efforts for that fledgling organization, it would not be where it is today. He will be sorely missed for all of his good work.
Corner Kitchen: Fruit of the vine
This week we’re looking for recipes to turn grapes into grape juice…plus. If you’ve got a fermentation favorite, post it below. . o O (Come to think of it, my mother used to do a home brew that doubled as a paint thinner and an airplane fuel. Maybe she’ll grace Henderson with her special formula.)

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Friday’s open line
A source close to the Vance County Board of Elections informed us yesterday that the decision to have Sunday early voting was actually a choice between satellite early voting (that is, early voting in locations other than the Henry A. Denis Building) or Sunday voting, and that Sunday voting was the less expensive of the two alternatives. This, of course, begs the question of why either one was considered necessary. In the absence of commentary from James Kearney or other …
Thursday’s open line
We’re fascinated by this idea of Sunday voting. The only North Carolina reference we could find to Sunday voting was here, and, yes, it involved a race that was racially divisive. We thank MS for her posting on the issue. We would welcome a comment from James Kearney, Chair of the Vance County Board of Elections regarding the issue. With that, the floor is yours. Keep it above the belt.

Tuesday’s open line
The idea of a juvenile curfew has been mentioned several times below. I grew up with such a curfew that was vigorously enforced, and our little borough did not have the problems of bordering Pittsburgh. Would a curfew help the Coble Boulevard situation, or would it simply be one more ordinance that doesn’t get enforced? Let your thoughts on this or anything else be known on today’s open line.
The psychology of stereotypes
Here’s a reference to an ABC news article on stereotypes sent to us by a longtime reader that we found very enlightening. We hope it will provide some insight, perhaps self-knowledge, or a little mutual understanding, maybe?
