Oxford Preparatory School Hosts First Summer Camp
Open to Rising 3rd through 8th Grade Students. This will be the first summer camp offered by Oxford Preparatory School. The camp is intended for rising third through eighth grade students within the surrounding area. Camp activities will be predominantly held at Oxford Preparatory school on Landis Road. VGCC puts Associate in Arts degree on fast track
Vance-Granville Community College is introducing a new way for students to complete the first two years of a four-year degree on an accelerated timetable. Starting with the fall semester that begins in August 2017, students will have the option to earn the 60-credit-hour Associate in Arts (College Transfer) degree in just three semesters: fall, spring and summer. Louisburg College Starts Free STEM Institute
Louisburg College is planning a free summer STEM Institute for high school students interested in pursuing science and learning to do research at the college level. Geraldo Banaag and his math students at Henderson Middle School have been recognized nationally for their celebration of National Pi Day on March 14. Lisa Wise of Imagine Nation, the organization which organized Pi Day activities in schools across the United States, recognized Banaag and his efforts at HMS. Northern Vance Students Help EM Rollins Students
Northern Vance High School students visited on March 22 with students and teachers at E.M. Rollins Elementary School to lend a helping hand with reading, math and even recess. Applications are now being accepted for enrollment in the STEM Early High School for the 2017-2018 school year. Grades 6-8 middle school have a focus on project based learning with instructional emphasis in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. VGCC names 258 students to President’s and Dean’s Lists
Vance-Granville Community College has announced that 126 students earned President’s List and 132 earned Dean’s List academic honors for the fall semester that ended in Dec. 2016. The President’s List recognizes students who achieved a perfect 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) while carrying a “full load” (of at least 12 credit hours) in 100-level or higher curriculum courses. Vance County Schools Empowerment Academy Builds New Garden With Help from Karma for Cara Foundation
Administrators and students at the Vance County Schools Empowerment Academy have created a garden outside of the facility’s main entrance with funding from a special grant program. The grant funding, totaling about $170, came from the Karma for Cara Foundation which funds youth volunteer projects. Brian Schlessinger, a teacher at the Empowerment Academy, led efforts to apply for the grant and create the garden. He worked with his students and administrators at the academy to seek the grant funding and …

The president of Vance-Granville Community College, Dr. Stelfanie Williams, recently recognized a group of faculty members for excellence by awarding the “Vanguard Cup” to the college’s English department. The department became just the second recipient of the cup, an honor created by Dr. Williams to recognize “exceptional team performance toward the college mission, vision and strategic plan.” In this case, the English department was particularly noted for developing a strategy to improve students’ writing skills, which would in turn help …

Vance County Drop Out Rate Declines
The N.C. Department of Public Instruction has announced the 2015-2016 graduation rates and the 2015-2016 dropout rates for public school districts across the state. Vance County Schools saw significant improvement over previous years in both areas. With a four-year cohort graduation rate of 81.9 percent for the class of 2016, this is a record high for Vance County over the past five years. The class of 2015 had a four-year cohort graduation rate of 77.6 percent in Vance County. Vance …

Mid-Year Graduates from AdVance Academy at WVHS
Congratulations to the mid-year graduates from the AdVance Academy at Western Vance High School. Chris Alston, Krystyna Stallings and Jose Hernandez, shown from left in the accompanying photo, have successfully completed their high school education.
