Three VGCC Instructors named Certified Nurse Educators
Three instructors from the Nursing program at Vance-Granville Community College recently earned the designation Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) after meeting strict eligibility criteria and successfully completing a rigorous certification examination developed and administered by the National League for Nursing (NLN). The newly certified educators are Nursing department chair Erica L. Jastrow of Franklinton, instructor Camella G. Marcom of Wake Forest, and instructor Anna R. Seaman of Manson. They are the first VGCC Nursing faculty to become certified through this program. …
VGCC awarded $1.75 million Federal Grant for Training
Vance-Granville Community College will develop and enhance innovative training programs for advanced manufacturing careers with support from a new grant worth more than $1.75 million, awarded on Sept. 18 by the U.S. Department of Labor. The Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) Grant is the single largest competitive grant award received in VGCC’s history. U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Louisburg College Awarded $2.5 Million Grant Only Private NC Institution to Receive Title III Grant

State Board of Education Approves Higher Student Proficiency Standards
North Carolina students now have a higher proficiency standard to meet on the state’s end-of-grade and end-of-course tests. New standards today were approved by the State Board of Education to bring expectations for student performance in line with current career and college expectations. When the 2012-13 test results are provided to parents, schools and districts in November, results will be much lower than North Carolina has seen for a number of years. Vance County Schools Announcement on Changes to Competency and Computer Skills Standards
Effective July 1, 2009, students not enrolled in a public school who have met all state and local graduation requirements, except for achieving proficiency on the N.C. Reading and/or Mathematics Competency Test and/or the N.C. Computer Skills Test and/or their alternate assessments, are no longer required to meet the competency or computer skills standards and may petition their former high school for a diploma. Vance-Granville Community College will offer a Sewing class on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. The course, taught by Lunnie Taborn of Oxford, will be held on Monday evenings from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m., Oct. 21 through Nov. 25 in room 5201 (Building 5). VGCC schedules Spring Semester New Student Orientation sessions
The Spring 2014 semester at Vance-Granville Community College begins Monday, Jan. 13, and orientation sessions for new students will begin soon. Attending an orientation session is required for all new students in any of the college’s curriculum programs, and for students who are returning to VGCC after being away for three or more years. For several years, the Vance-Granville Community College Culinary Arts program has participated in the North Carolina Hot Sauce Contest by serving their own spicy treats to festival attendees.
