I thought teachers were underpaid. Then I read this. I make more than some police chiefs. What’s wrong with this picture? Editor’s Note: Part of the editor’s household income is derived from a police salary.

It’s Valentine’s Day. Yea. If you have to gush, do it here. This way, you won’t scare the children.
County attorney “Stubbs” Hight dies
This from a long-time reader: “[Hight was] a true local hero that gave 110 percent. He was a true character and a gentle soul that put up with the antics of large and small citizens. My social standing was far away from his, but he was kind to me and my family when I needed it the most.” We couldn’t have said it any better.
To the editor: There is no excuse
Please consider this…. The public is entitled to access to all government activities, records, and meetings.
Weekend open line
How sensationalizing the weather almost killed your friendly neighborhood editor (and a friend of his):

Sorry, Boho, but the simple fact is that clowns are evil. Even a child can tell you that. I myself became aware of the Clown Conspiracy as early as 1972 (The Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus used to begin its season in Pittsburgh and end in New York). In college I learned all about these Bozo bin Ladens and their tools of deceit, from their secret training facility in Sarasota, Florida to their seemingly entertaining use of Volkswagens as …

Warning! Extreme sarcasm hazard! Here’s yet another piece of insanity from Raleigh: the Department of Public Instruction is considering reducing the number of tests our students take. Have they lost their minds? If they stop all the testing, we could actually get a chance to teach! Even worse, our students might learn something too complicated for a multiple choice question! Haul out the straightjackets and butterfly nets on today’s open line.
Book & cinema review: The Golden Compass
To write this review, I have to make two bald statements:

Of the new Henderson City Council, this can be said for certain: the first full meeting flew by with only the slightest whiff of rancor. The spirit of cooperation seems to be cooperating nicely when it comes to discussion and voting. With that, we give you today’s open line.

It’s nice to learn that Progress Energy is putting some money into green technology. Now I don’t feel so bad about the bills. Why, yes, I do have an electric house. How did you know?

The house I paid $70,000 for in 2003 (which, incidentally, also appraised for $70,000 in 2003) is now worth, according to the Vance County tax office, something over $94,000. Huh? Did someone put an addition on it while I wasn’t looking? For my part, I’ve been watching the soffit and fascia rot away and wishing I had the money to do something about it. Anyone else have a horror story?
Cinema Review: Enchanted
Well, maybe it isn’t Shrek’s swamp, but Disney’s latest flick makes for “some ‘Enchanted’ evening!” (Unless, of course, you’re at the matinee with your kids…)

Watching too much Star Trek really is unhealthy, especially when you’re six. Who knew?

According to the Raleigh News & Observer, a state commission has concluded that too much time in school is spent on testing. Our reaction: Duh! Enjoy our open line.
To the editor: Elected officials and taxes
I have been reading HIH about a lot of blogs on the circumstances surrounding a city councilman about not paying his taxes.
To the editor: Trash along Vance roads
I recently returned to Henderson and Vance County for a ceremony.

Can recess be a valuable learning tool? The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation seems to think so. Anecdotally, I think any elementary school teacher will tell you that a child bursting with unreleased energy is not a teachable child. At least, I will. You make the call on our open line. After all, they’re your kids too.
