Evening mixed media art class starts Feb. 4 at VGCC Franklin Campus
Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus will offer a new class, “Painting & Mixed Media,” on Thursday evenings from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m., Feb. 4 through May 5. The Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center has scheduled a pair of free seminars for Thursday, Feb. 11, at the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. “Introduction to Nonprofits” will be held from 1 until 4 p.m. that day. “How to Write a Business Plan: The Most Important Part of Starting A Business” will follow from 6 until 9 p.m. The location for both is Room 7107 (Building 7). Carver Elementary Groundbreaking Rescheduled for February 3rd, 2016
Vance County Schools has rescheduled the groundbreaking ceremony for the new multipurpose room at Carver Elementary School for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 3. The public is invited to attend.
Dean Thomas named Vance County Schools New Transportation Leader, New Principal for E.M. Rollins Sought
Dean Thomas, who has served as the principal of E.M. Rollins Elementary School for the last several years, has been named Supervisor of Pupil Transportation. Thomas will replace Clay Owen, the former director of Transportation who retired on December 31. The search for a new principal at E.M. Rollins has already started. Thomas will remain at E.M. Rollins until a new leader is selected.
Many North Carolina Students Go Hungry During Summer Break; Summer Nutrition Programs Help Bridge Hunger Gap
Last year, more than 850,000 North Carolina students were eligible to receive free or reduced-priced meals at school through the National School Lunch Program. Of that number, a mere 82,830 received meals during the summer months through summer nutrition programs. In other words, 90 percent of the state’s economically disadvantaged, school-age children may have experienced hunger during the summer months. The State Board of Community Colleges recently selected Dr. Ben F. Currin, the former president of Vance-Granville Community College, to receive the highest honor the board can bestow, the I.E. VGCC offers Spring Mini-Term Classes
Although the Spring 2016 semester at Vance-Granville Community College is underway, there are still opportunities to register for a variety of classes offered during “mini-terms.” These sections start later during the semester, but end on May 9, at the same time as the full 16-week courses, and they include just as many hours of instruction as under the traditional schedule. VGCC educational program puts a local focus on Black History Month
To celebrate Black History Month, Vance-Granville Community College will hold an enlightening program focusing on local history. The program, entitled “Honoring Our Past, Understanding Our Present & Shaping Our Future,” is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m., in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. STEM Early High School in Vance County Schools Applications Now Available
Applications for current fifth graders to enroll in the STEM Early High School in Vance County Schools for the 2016-2017 school year are now available from counselors in local elementary schools. The application also requires recommendations from two teachers at the student’s current school. These teacher recommendations are to be completed online. Two residential, hands-on learning institutes focusing on math, science, and technology for students and teachers will be held this summer in Oak Ridge, Tennessee at one the nation’s premier facilities for scientific research. An informational meeting organized by North Carolina State University and North Carolina Cooperative Extension to discuss the upcoming Connect NC bond referendum was held at Vance-Granville Community College’s South Campus on Jan. 14. Groundbreaking Ceremony Scheduled at Carver Elementary
Vance County Schools will host a groundbreaking ceremony at Carver Elementary School at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27, for the school’s new multipurpose room. Construction on the facility, which will be used in a variety of ways by the school including for physical education activities and school assemblies, is expected to begin within the next few weeks. The Vance-Granville Community Band started rehearsals again on Monday, Jan. 11, but it is not too late for musicians to join the group, according to Carl Cantaluppi of Butner, clarinet player and music librarian for the ensemble. Students at Vance-Granville Community College recently heard from motivational speaker Tawan Perry. His presentation on the college’s Main Campus was sponsored by the VGCC Male Mentoring Club and the Student Government Association. A resident of Raleigh, Perry started his own higher education at a community college in Maryland before eventually earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees and becoming a nationally-known speaker and author focusing on college student success.
