Friday / Weekend Open Lines
A reminder that city offices will be closed on Friday, and many places of business in the area will be closed as well. We hope everyone enjoys the holiday weekend. Safe Kids – Downtown Event
April 20th, 2011, there was a quite successful event in downtown Henderson promoting safe activities for kids, and raise to awareness of child abuse. It began with a march through downtown which ended on Breckenridge street at numerous activities for the family. Please check our photo gallery below for pictures. $50,000 bond for suspected drug dealer
On April 19, 2011 officers with the Henderson Police Department Narc/Vice Unit arrested Jason Scott Green, 29, of 429 Sunnyview Road, Henderson after conducting a traffic stop on 158 Bypass. Mr. Green was arrested and charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver a Schedule II Controlled Substance; resist, delay, obstruct an officer; and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Mr. Green received a $50,000 secured bond pending a court hearing on May 17, 2011.
Nearly 2 pounds of marijuana seized
On April 14, 2011 officers with the Henderson Police Department Narc/Vice Unit conducted a traffic stop at Corbitt Road and Chestnut Street, Henderson. During the course of the traffic stop marijuana was located inside the vehicle. The driver, John Henry Russell, 58, of 1120 Beacon Ave, Henderson was arrested. Upon further investigation a search warrant was obtained for Mr. Russell’s residence, 1120 Beacon Ave, where additional amounts of marijuana were located. In total 868.7 grams of marijuana was seized. Mr. …

An interesting bill was filed yesterday providing a new way to pay bonuses for our state school teachers. If enacted, school districts would be able to sell advertising space on school buses, and the proceeds would go towards bonus pay for exemplary teachers. There are limits as to the advertising content: no alcohol, tobacco, political or religious content allowed. Personally, as a business owner that would consider the advertisement, I very rarely see a school bus during my normal commute. …

Extended Unemployment Benefits Held Hostage The House and Senate passed legislation on Thursday extending unemployment insurance benefits for 37,000 North Carolinians, but passage came with a catch. The provision extending benefits also mandated that Gov. Perdue’s proposed budget would be reduced by 13 percent and serve as a continuation budget for one year if a biannual budget is not finalized by June 30. The Governor vetoed the bill on Saturday. Suspicious Fire
Press Release April 18th, 2011 On April 15, 2011 around 10:34 PM officers with the Henderson Police Department responded to 128 Henry Street, Henderson in reference to a suspicious fire. Upon communicating with fire personnel on scene it was determined by the fire department that the fire was suspicious in nature. Finally got the audio (and video) from last weeks Town Talk. The town talk audio on the WIZS website was having issues with the volume going up and down. Bill to require identification to vote
Voter Identification at Polls was filed yesterday in the North Carolina Senate. It would: require that voters provide photo identification prior to voting; and to provide for the issuance of north carolina voter identification cards; and to require voter education on proper identification for voting; and to provide for the issuance of no fee special identification cards to registered voters without proper identification for voting.
